I have used the Seventh Generation Dish Pacs for 18 months now. My dishwasher always leaves loose powder in the detergent cup so it is necessary for me to use pacs to prevent this. I have been very happy with the cleanliness of my dishes and there is never a residue left behind.

The original version of these dish pacs were packaged in a cardboard box. I was disappointed to see that the packaging had been changed to plastic and I contacted Seventh Generation to express my disappointment. To my surprise they responded with the following:

We appreciate your concern for the impacts of the products you purchase. I do want to be clear that the pouch we are using can be recycled. It can be recycled at most grocery stores, at the front of the store many places have recycling for the plastic bags and the pouch can be added to this.

Another important note, the cardboard we did use for the pacs was not recyclable. There was a small amount of clay in the cardboard to help prevent any moisture from entering and this prevented it from being recycled. It could break down, if exposed to the right elements but most likely this would not happen if tossed in the trash.

The new pouch is not ideal but the overall impact is actually less than that of the cardboard we were using. We do feel that plastic needs to used only when necessary and that it should certainly be recyclable. We continue to work on the packaging and ingredients of our products to minimize the impacts they will have. I do hope that our products can still be a match for your home. Please feel free to contact me if I can help with anything.

--- 2013 Update ---
I still use 7th Gen Dish Pacs and I continue to be happy with the cleanliness of my dishes.

This gets glass dishes clean and crystal-clear! It doesn't leave white residue.

About a year ago some new law passed that required most dishwasher soap companies to change their formulas. In our home we use a lot of glass (because we don't like having our food come into contact with plastics), so all of our dishes started getting cloudy. I tried to hand-wash them, but it was pretty hard to remove the residue. They didn't look very clean.

The problem kept getting worse until we switched to Seventh Generation Automatic Dishwasher pacs. Seriously, the first time I used one of these, all of our plates and bowls and glasses came out clear again! It was amazing. Half of our plates (the ones in the cupboard) were dull and cloudy from the Cascade automatic dishwasher packs, and the other half were beautiful and clear from these Seventh Generation automatic dishwasher pacs. It was such an incredible contrast that we will definitely never go back to the other brand.

Shortly after we started using Seventh Generation soap, I heard about the change in dishwasher soap ingredients, and I heard that the solution is to add "citric acid" to each load of dishes. It gets rid of the problem with cloudy dishes. The same film that makes dishes cloudy also creates a residue on dishwasher parts and can cause dishwashers to need repair...but citric acid also removes the buildup on the dishwasher parts. I looked at the list of ingredients on this Seventh Generation soap and the first ingredient is citric acid. No wonder it works so well!

I highly recommend this automatic dishwasher soap. If you're having problems with your dishes coming out cloudy, this will solve the problem because it contains citric acid--so it will also help maintain your actual dishwasher.

I was skeptical, but hopeful, that this product would work better than the other dishwasher detergents we've tried (Cascade powder, Seventh Generation Gel) and boy howdy, it sure does. We have hard water, and the previous detergents, even with the rinse agent, left our glassware less than clear. After a just a couple of loads, everything came out clean, and the glasses were clear. Really clear. I couldn't believe it. I feel like one of those housewives in an old TV commercial. Our dishes and glasses are coming our clean and sparkling! Plus...no phosphates and good for the environment! (Smiles at the camera) Going to check into Seventh Generation's rinse agent now, cause these detergent packs are great.

Works just as well as other name brand pacs, but without the harmful chemicals. Leaves no residue for us, even when our water is very hard.

I use the EWG (Environmental Working Group) website quite a bit to look up different cosmetics, cleaners, etc. I decided to try these after seeing it had a "A" rating. After a few months of use, we are really pleased with how clean and streak-free our dishes have been. Highly recommend!

I switched to these pacs because I clean my baby bottles in the dishwasher and didn't want to use the harsh chemicals in the other brands. These pacs do tend to leave residue on your dishes, especially on tupperware, as compared to the cascade pacs. I also recently talked to a diswasher repair man and he said that the 7th gen isn't good for the diswasher cause it leaves a residue. He suggested switching to the Finish Quantum brand instead because they too have removed the phosphates from their cleaners. Once I run out of these, I am going to look into using the Quantums instead.

We tried these out because we try to be eco-friendly wherever possible. The concern is the sacrifice of cost, quality or both. After going through my first pack I can gladly say this works very well. Purchasing from here actually saves money over some of the more well known brands.

One thing though, I have a strict policy about not letting food get crusted onto dishes, silverware, pans, etc. Everything immediately gets sprayed under hot water (or soaked later). If anyone leaves something crusted and places it in the dishwasher, I put back in the sink and make them soak it and scrub it off. Some may think this is counter-productive but it doesn't fill the traps in the dishwasher and increases the life of it.

I'm willing to bet that people that gave this sub par reviews probably just loaded their machine with a ton of encrusted dishes and the like. I'm sure at twice the price you could probably find a dish pac that would get most of that off, but you're probably killing your machine in the end.

This detergent packets leave a lot of residue on my dishes. I think I am going to switch back to a conventional detergent before I am even finished with the bag of packets. I find myself having to throughly wash my dishes before they go in the machine, then not packing the dishwasher to optimal fullness and then having to wash gritty white powder off of half the dishes or just running the cycle again. If the aim is to preserve water resources then these packets don't get the job done. I have no doubt that the chemicals involved are more green but all the wasted water has got to be a net drag on the environment. I have used other 7th Generation products and been happy with them, although their liquid laundry detergent went rancid in my front loading washer requiring that I take it apart and scoop out big globs of nasty yellowish goop. I am afraid it is back to Tide and Cascade for me because all that stinky laundry and extra washing can't be any worse for the environment than the original detergents I was using. Green-washing, both literally and metaphorically.

I'll give the product 2 stars because I purchased it for its eco-friendly ingredients, but, at least with my dishwasher, the product doesn't always seem to dissolve completely - and that is with a dishwasher that processes for 90 minutes!

Works well, leaving no residue. Cleans dishes with little or no pre-rinsing, even when run on the shortest "delicate" cycle in my circa-1998 Maytag dishwasher. No scent in the air.

Caveats: I have normal water, and I don't tend to leave thick coatings of dried on goop on my plate (say, old chili), and I fill the pre-wash compartment of the dishwasher (with an eco-friendly dish gel). Just as with any detergent, I'm sure poorly placed dishes, cooked-on dirt, hard water, etc would make for less satisfactory results.

There's also the big pluses that warrant the premium pricing: no lingering chemical scent in the air after use, and you're not flushing phosphates down the drain. That means no VOCs in the air to damage your lungs (my kitchen positively reeks after using Cascade Complete), and much fewer chemicals down the drain to harm your local watershed.

It works well, smells good, is made of natural ingredients, with recycled/recyclable packaging, and is produced by an ethical company. Highly recommended.
