5.0 out of 5 stars My new laundry detergent!
I've had this conflict going on for the past few years, I feed my family organic food and use natural cleaning products but I was not willing to give up my Tide. I have four kids and I've used it for years, with really good results, but I know it's not good for the environment so I was looking forward to giving Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent a try.

I am pleased with the quality of the product. The smell is amazing. The only problem that I have is that the packaging is not great. My first order leaked before it arrive, which Amazon corrected. But a few days after getting the new order and sitting in near my front door, the product over heated and bubbled over out of one of the containers. If you order, be sure...

The Amazon free shipping is wonderful. It's a big box but should last us many months and they even have an auto-ship option with extra savings!

I love that this is concentrated. It makes so much sense to use less water in processing so that you can use only a small cap full to do a whole load. I also like the scent! It's lavender and eucalyptus. I wasn't sure how they would smell together but they make a very nice and fresh smelling combination, that makes your clothes smell really clean.

I'm so happy I gave this a try, our clothes are as clean as with Tide, smell better and I'm helping the environment. A winner all around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tide vs. Seventh Generation, December 13, 2007
This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have changed laundry detergents over the years, but inevitably always end up coming back to Tide, because to me it has always been the best. Then one night talking to my environmentally and animal friendly pal about my sensitive skin he suggested I 'go green' with my cleaning and bath products. He explained that the chemical free products had made a difference with him. So slowly I have been experimenting with various earth and animal friendly products, finding myself surprised at how well they actually work.

For the past couple of weeks I have been using this laundry detergent in every cycle, every water temperature and on every type of clothing material I have. On my first laundry day I did not notice an improvement over Tide, but I didn't notice a downgrade either; I noticed no difference at all. I thought that odd, so I got all scientific and decided to conduct some experiments.

Experiment one: I allowed my son to have a carpet picnic two days in a row in the living room. I placed his lunch each day on a regular bath towel to insure my rug remained clean and the bath towels got dirty. Then a couple days later I washed them, without treating any of the stains. What I found was almost all the stains were completely gone, only one or two remained, but were very light.

Experiment two: I cut one of my husbands white t-shirts in half and smeared each half with ketchup. I didn't rinse the ketchup; I just pre-treated one with Seventh Generation and the other with Tide. The next day I washed the Seventh Generation half in its recommended cycle with more Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate. I then did the same with the Tide half, in more Tide. Both were left with a very slight discoloration, barely visible unless you were really looking.

I pay $7.59 for a 100 fl oz/32 load bottle of Tide at my grocery store. The Seventh Generation ends up being, through this site, about $8.88 for a 50 fl oz/32 load bottle. Would I pay a little more for this product? Is it worth it? Based on the cleaning power and environmental benefits, you bet.

What did this all teach me?
1.) I can use Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate and get the same cleaning power as Tide. But while the cleaning power is the same only Seventh Generation is better for the environment.
2.) Seventh Generation smells wonderful without being overpowering or flowery.
3.) When using this product, to be safe, pre-treat all potential stains.
4.) It costs a little more, a negative, but it has far more positives to make it easy to overlook.
5.) Husbands don't like it when you cut up their clothes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Win-win! An effective and eco-friendly product!, November 14, 2007

Seventh Generation is a conscientious company creating healthful home products that cause minimum-to-zero environmental impact. Their laundry concentrate is one of the superior products in their product line. This laundry concentrate has excellent performance, indistinguishable from any major brand of detergent. The wonderful fragrance dissipates from the clothing, leaving a clean smell on the clothing, which does not irritate my perfume sensitive husband. And great for those of us who dislike the strong, cheap perfume smell of some major detergents. It is a hypoallergenic and non-toxic product. Because it is ultra-concentrated, the consumer can use less of the product and Seventh Generation uses less water to dilute the product.

The environmental benefits of using this product are much greater than I imagined. Upon reading the Seventh Generation website material I learned that most laundry detergent is petroleum based; a non-renewable source which pollutes the environment. Seventh Generation cleaners are vegetable based--a renewable and eco-friendly ingredient. The laundry concentrate does not contain ingredients toxic to the environment like slow to biodegrade optical brighteners, present in most major brands of detergent. There are no artificial fragrances in this product; the scent is derived from herbs and plants. Seventh Generation uses minimal plastic in packaging. And finally, since you are buying in bulk, online, there is less gasoline wasted in receiving this product and you receive bulk savings!

Enjoy this effective, freshly scented product, secure in the knowledge that you are doing your part to protect our ecosystem!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Green" laundry detergent, October 22, 2007

This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
This product has cleaned my clothing well. It has a nice smell while it's washing, but the odor doesn't linger after the clothing is dried - they're left with a clean, "neutral" smell... nice for those of us with allergies!

It doesn't suds a lot. It's highly concentrated. I can use it in cold, warm or hot water with equally satisfactory results.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh but not overpowering fragrance, and no residue, November 21, 2007
This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
We've used Seventh Generation products before, but never the laundry concentrate. I was initially concerned about the lavender and eucalyptus fragrance, thinking it would be overpowering and would stay on the clothes for too long, but I was pleasantly surprised in the first load of laundry.

The product comes in very easy to manage (and carry) small jugs, that also fit well on a shelf. The plastic top screws right off, and you pour the thick and gooey clear liquid into the cap which is marked for easy measuring. For a large load (super on some machines), I used two of the cap-fulls.

Right out of the laundry and into the dryer I could smell a very light eucalyptus scent that was pleasing and not at all overpowering. I won't say the clothes dried any faster than normal (but wouldn't that be a cool side effect), but they came out smelling fresh and clean. I would imagine that the eucalyptus does have some odour fighting properties - I use the essential oil as a house deodorizer.

Since the product uses all natural components (which they list out on the container, and even tout that they do so), there is no residue that stays with the clothes to get on your skin. If you have allergy issues with fabric softeners, this product will not cause any skin irritation or reaction (that I've found - and usually fabric softeners make my skin itch).

Overall, I give the product high marks. It does the job (cleaning the clothes), has a great fragrance (that isn't overwhelming), and actually make the house smell really nice when I'm doing a load of laundry. The benefit also extends by being fully biodegradable and all natural.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus and Lavender..., February 21, 2008
This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
To whomever considers this product, I submit the following:

1. My clothes are clean (a sturdy product)
2. My clothes smell nice (credit Blue Eucalyptus and Lavender)
3. My damage to the environment is minimized, thanks to the
enzymes used to clean the clothes (as opposed to your more
caustic chemicals that are in most other Laundry Detergents)
4. No damage to my skin as a result of using the product.

I heartily recommend that you try the product! I've replaced my
current Laundry Concentrate with Seventh Generation!

My rating: 5 Stars!

Like another reviewer my skin does not react well to dyes or fragrances. I was a bit worried when I read that there was a fragrance in the cleaner I was a bit leery. I can say that whatever makes up the fragrance is not overpowering and seems to not be an aggravating agent in my skin.

I have five people in my households and three of them are children age's two to six. Because of this the laundry always needs to be cleaned. I have run several loads through the wash with this cleaner so far. All loads have come out at least as good as the product I was using, Purex. The whites remained white and the colors remained true without fading. I was even lazy on two of the loads and neglected to separate colors and no harm done.

Because of the way my washer setup is I see the discharge from the machine into the drain sink. It was curious to me that the "suds" level was much less with this detergent then conventional products. This can only be good and a reflection of the vegetable base of the product.

It feels good to be using something that is environmentally friendly AND effective. I love the smaller containers and concentrated nature as well. I found the price to be reasonable and in the same ball park as quality conventional substitutes. I believe I have found my new detergent of choice.

The idea of buying laundry detergent online feels a little strange to me, but honestly some days I could use the time savings. When I told my wife I'd ordered this, she at first balked. She's very particular and has a brand she prefers to use. But after using it we like this detergent. It seems to do a very good job getting the laundry clean, and I notice no difference with other products we've used before. The eucalyptus smell is pretty strong when you take off the cap, but it doesn't leave a strong scent on the laundry - it just smells clean. I also appreciate the environmental-friendliness of this product - it's free of petroleum-based chemicals and is biodegradeable. Those factors alone may make it a good choice for people with chemical sensitivities or allergies. I was a bit concerned that the bottle says 32 loads which refers to "small" loads. We have 4 children so we rarely do anything but large loads. But my wife and I compared it with our usual product (which is measured in "medium" loads) and it seems to be comparable in the number of loads it will do, and perhaps at a slight cost-savings over the grocery store. Overall, we're pleased with the product and will likely order it again - even though it feels a little strange to buy laundry detergent online!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough on smelly laundry!, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
My husband works in a bar, and his clothes always smelled like cigarettes, and that "sweaty alcohol" smell (as best I can describe it) at the end of each night. We're both allergic to most of the laundry detergents currently available in stores, so my choices were already limited as to what I could wash his clothes in. We purchased the Seventh Generation laundry soap 2 months ago when our son was born, and for kicks I decided to do a load of my husband's laundry with it was well. Now it's the only laundry detergent we use. It took out the smell completely and gets everything just as clean if not cleaner looking than our old brand did. It's also nice to be able to purchase products that are easier on the environment. I'm very impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean-smelling and effective. A nice product for the environmentally conscious, November 19, 2007
This review is from: Seventh Generation Laundry Concentrate, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender, 50-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I've always thought detergents were pretty much the same. Obviously it's worthwhile to buy concentrated detergent because the concentration allows less packaging. The worst environmental disasters from detergents of earlier times (enzymes, foaming rivers, etc.) are pretty much illegal by now, so it should come down to price, right?

When I learned about Seventh Generation, I was a bit skeptical. Would it really clean effectively. As a martial artist, my biggest problems are my uniforms--they get sweaty and stink. So, could a vegetable-based detergent actually get them clean and get rid of the smell?

Seventh Generation recommends pre-cleaning. With one uniform, I chose not to follow these instructions. Although the uniform was washed and no longer smelled like sweat, some stains remained. For a second uniform in another batch of laundry, I chose to follow the instructions and rubbed detergent into the fabric. In this case, the result was fine--clean-smelling and clean-looking. Importantly, I've had the same results with standard detergents--without pre-rubbing, the stains stay.

Overall, I'm highly pleased with this product. I also appreciate that the scent is mild. I don't want to smell like a flower while I'm sparring.
