Great Stinky Cleaner, Product Has an MSDS,
By
This review is from: Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Wipes, 70-count Tubs (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Look these cleaned my counters superbly. I can't complain about that. And they are very moist so one wipe will get most of my kitchen counters completely clean and I have a ton of counter top space to cover.
But my god do they stink! Because thymol is an organic aromatic compound, you can't miss the smell and it appears to bind to the lipids in your skin, causing the smell to remain on my fingers after washing them. It's been over an hour now and they still smell. NOW THE IMPORTANT STUFF: 1. Material Safety Data Sheet for this product because of the thymol. 2. "Keep out of the reach of children" Thymol is a Class I eye irritant and a Class II skin irritant. EPA states that this compound should not be used for indoor residential, or day care use. It is also a skin sensitizer, which means that you may develop a reaction to this compound with repeated exposure. 3.From the back of the label: "Wash food contact surfaces with potable water after use." Doesn't this defeat the purpose of using the surface wipes? I don't want to wipe my counters twice. 4. Sensitive Skin. I have sensitive skin and my skin freaked out. VERDICT: This is a no go.There are too many risks and not enough reasons to use the product. For green products that don't require an MSDS usemethod Cleaning Wipes, Cucumber, Case Pack, Six - 30 Count Tubs (180 Wipes). For a superb disinfectant go with Green Works Natural Wipes, Original, 30-Count Packages (Pack of 12)s. The active ingredient is ethanol, which is what we use in our lab as anti-microbial agent. It is also used in some hand-sanitizers and is effective in very low concentrations. They are also compostable. I have used both of these products and love them both.

Stays moist during use,

This review is from: Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Wipes, 70-count Tubs (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
I've been using these for a few weeks to do a daily "swipe" of the bathroom sink/counter and toilet seat. Overall, I'm quite satisfied. I bought it somewhat on impulse when I found it for a really good price. I'm pleased with how moist the wipe stays -- moist enough that I can use one wipe for the whole bathroom (starting with the sink/counters and finishing with the toilet, and folding it over as I go). Of course, this only really works if you're doing it on a daily basis so that you're really just maintaining the area; if you weren't doing it daily (or near daily), you might need to use more than one wipe.
The smell is rather strong. It's somewhat of an antiseptic/medicinal smell and it does linger for a bit. At first I didn't care for it, but after a week or so, it actually kind of grew on me. At this pace, it will take me about 10 weeks to go through one container; I cannot comment yet on how well the wipes will perform when I'm getting toward the end of the package. UPDATE (7/21/10): I still had some left in one container 6 months after opening, and the wipes were still plenty moist! My teens don't like these wipes (particularly the smell) and prefer to use a spray with a paper towel for their daily "swipe" of the counters and toilet. But I still like these wipes for the convenience factor.

Ancient formula, unusual scent,

Whether you like these wipes or not will depend to a great extent on what you think of the scent. It is not particularly strong but it is distinctive, and it lingers.
The active ingredient is thymol, a naturally occurring compound that has been used (as a constituent of various plant oils) for thousands of years for its antiseptic properties. Today you will find it in many mouthwash and toothpaste formulations. That may give you a clue as to the sort of scent it has. The tissues are well-sodden and so an application goes a long way. They seem to be as effective as other wipes. They are worth a try.

Good Stuff,

Cleans well and smells very good in my opinion.
As someone with a chemistry background I find it puzzling that people are worried that an MSDS exists on one chemical component of this product. Even water has an MSDS. There is some thymol in the product, but the whole product is not thymol. Almost anything at a high enough concentration can be dangerous. Of course, you never know what you may be allergic to. Furthermore, anything that kills germs, botanical or otherwise is probably not good to eat or roll in at high concentrations. Of course they tell you not to clean any food surfaces with it, they don't want to get sued. I seriously doubt a small amount is going to hurt anyone unless they have very sensitive skin or specific allergies.

We normally use clorox wipes around the house but I was very pleased with these wipes and in many ways these are better. They are very moist, thus they go a long way. I wiped my whole kitchen counters with just one and a half wipes. The smell is organic and pleasing to the nose. They also worked great on my bathroom sinks. I'm very content with this product.

I ordered this product with several things in mind. First, it is a 7th Generation product that is environmentally friendly and kills 99.99% of common germs including H1N1 and salmonella. When I received this product in the mail, I marveled at how even though there was no seal, the towels were moist (overly so) and easy to use (meaning a good size and texture) and seemed durable. I quickly began pulling them out and using them all over the house. I wiped off the counters. I wiped a spill on the floor. I walked into the bathrooms and wiped various surfaces. And can honestly say that I loved the fact that they were again "extremely moist". We all know how some wipes dry out either as you use them or as they sit up in the container. The only draw back that I can see to this product is......I can't decide if I like the odor. I lean strongly in the "it seemed a bit overwhelming" column. I am kind of sensitive to odors, and know how thyme smells, but it was a bit too strong. And the scent really lingers...several minutes after use. And even on your hands, the odor is strong even after washing them several times, the scent was still there. AND I know what some of you are saying, the product clearly mentions "thyme based technology" or "thymol" (thyme oil), but I wasn't really prepared for just how "herbie" (if that is a word) it smells. And finally, if it weren't for the odor, I would really LOVE this product. But maybe over time I will get use to the odor and kick up my review from a 4.5 to a solid 5.

I have been waiting for a product like this for such a long time! When my daughter was young, I used lysol or clorox wipes on her toys and around the house, and was later, the more educated and holistic me was really grossed out that I had done so when I realized the chemicals my baby had probably eaten off of them!
These wipes start out a little over wet and sudsy, which bothered me at first, until I realized how much they enable you to clean with one wipe, which is especially great when buying a slightly more expensive product. Also, despite the visible suds on the wipe, I didn't really notice them showing up on the surfaces I cleaned, and certainly left no residue or mess once they dried. I'm glad that they teamed up with clean well to include the disinfectant, as I already use their hand sanitizer spray and have come to trust it. The smell is something that a user just has to come to terms with. Personally, I like it -- it's the heavy chemical smells of traditional cleaners that I find hard to take. It's a bit strong at first, but like many natural scents, it grows on you (or at least it does me). I also love that you can go to seventh generation's website and easily find the FULL list of ingredients. I'm no expert, but I'm somewhat knowledgeable about chemicals, and I don't see anything that jumps out at me as a concern. Some don't like laurel sulfates (the sudsing agent), but I don't mind it as much on a cleaning cloth as I do on body products. All and all, I'm delighted there is such a product available now, and for the rare times I do want this sort of cleaner, I will use this instead of lysol or clorox wipes without hesitation.

Great for Kitchen Cleaning,
This review is from: Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Wipes, 70-count Tubs (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I buy a lot of Seventh Generation cleaners, especially detergent, so I was very interested in these disinfecting wipes when they were offered by the vine program. I decided to try them out in the kitchen and really liked how they worked. The cloth is a little tougher than Clorox wipes which works great if you are cleaning kitchen counters. The cloth didn't dry out fast and even seemed to do a good job on the stovetop. I especially liked how it cleaned my stainless sink. Usually I use Softscrub and that always seems to leave a little residue. Anyway, while cleaning it was as if I was growing an herb garden. The scent is mostly thyme and it doesn't last very long. I probably won't use these in the bathrooms because of the scent but I can recommend it for kitchens!

It smells like medication... it may work but the smell is so over powering I can't use it. I'm all for natural products, I use a lot of it around my house anywhere from hand soap to laundry soap but this is not something I would ever purchase.

Good Natural Product,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I am a fan of Seventh Generation products, as they use natural green formulations as opposed to the nasty chemicals other products often use. This is a good product that stays moist - unlike many wipes that come in tubes and dry out quickly. I had anticipated a more pleasant aroma - but these have a very subtle smell that is neither pleasant or unpleasant.
