Can't Tell The Difference,
By
This review is from: Seventh Generation Dish Liquid, 25-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Let me just start out by saying that I was not expecting much from this dishwashing liquid. This is the first Seventh Generation product I have purchased after seeing their products in several stores and always feeling a bit curious. I was using Dawn and was perfectly happy with it, but recently I have been on a "green" binge and decided to try biodegradable laundry detergent and dish soap. I read reviews that said this dish liquid doesn't suds up like Dawn or Palmolive, and that it doesn't cut through the grease and leave the dishes as clean. I have to disagree.
I have always been a person who uses "too much" soap when washing dishes, so I may use more than is necessary, but I found that the dish liquid had just as many bubbles, if not more, than Dawn. I love the scent, it is nice and doesn't smell fake or chemical like some of the regular brands. I compared a glass I washed with Dawn and a glass I washed with Seventh Generation, and they looked the same. I couldn't tell the difference! I even asked my husband to give his opinion about the amount of suds in the sink compared to Dawn, and he said it looked like there were more bubbles than normal. I use gloves, so I can't comment on how soft my hands were after using it. It is much cheaper on Amazon if you subscribe and save, since I paid over four dollars for it at my local health food store. Bottom line is that I like it and I will continue to buy it.

Does the job well, good for environment,

As others have said, Seventh Generation products are usually great; they're good for the environment and easy on sensitive skin. I like the lemongrass and clementine scent best although the lavender and mint is pretty good, too. This cleans better than most other non-toxic, all natural dish detergents. It suds up well and cleans very well, and lasts a long time. I go through about a bottle every 3-4 weeks, but I wash a lot of dishes. We're a family of 5 that usually has a lot of people over, and eat almost every meal at home - and I still use the dishwasher at least once each day.
I only buy this on sale at Amazon, usually through subscribe and save. At our local stores, this is over $3 per bottle, but at Amazon, it usually works out to just over $2. The shipments have changed from 12 bottles/package to 6 bottles/package, which is nice because it's hard to store a dozen bottles of dish liquid.

WARNING: more watery than the average dishsoap...don't over-squeeze,

This review is from: Seventh Generation Dish Liquid, 25-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
I have recently started using the Seventh Generation dishsoap after a long and exclusive relationship with Mrs. Meyer's dish soap.
The main thing to remember about Seventh Generation is that the consistancy of this soap is like water. It's very easy to over-squeeze. A little does go a long way. There are suds. The fragrance (at least of the lavender based scent) is very minimal. There is also a free and clear version that has no scent at all. This product does a great job cleaning my dishes. Glasses shine. No streaks when I leave the dishes to dry in the drainer. My pots don't require a great deal of extra scurbbing. There is no aftertaste left on anything (a problem I occasionally had with another brand). It is gentle on my hands. I couldn't ask for much more. I do have to say that the scent is minimal. I am not a fan of lavender. Actually, I hate the smell of lavender but have had no issues with the smell of the Seventh Generation lavender based scented dishsoap. The price point is also very good in comparison to other green products. Love that fact as well. Overall excellent product that I highly recommend.

*Update* I noticed a New formula label on this soap a while back. Now it stinks. It smells like rotten oranges. So now when I clean my plastic mugs and such, it leaves that nasty scent. I think it cleans a bit better, but I hate the new scent. it's supposed to be free and clear, but that is a misnomer now. I still use it to wash my produce, but it leaves the odor on them. I wish the company would change it back so it smells like coconut again. I'm sad.
I bought this because it has natural coconut and no perfume. When I grew up we used Joy dish soap, it was the one that left the least perfumy smell and taste on dishes. I think we may have used some Ajax lemon scented some too. As soon as Sunlight dish soap came out, that's pretty-much all we used, because it didn't leave any dish soapy smell or taste. I remember that some of the worst offenders were Palmolive, Ajax anti-baterial orange, and Dawn. My friend once made me some Dawn flavored chili. She had used a teflon pan and always used Dawn. Dawn is nasty, it even makes your dishes smell like Dawn. But, I have found most humans can't smell worth a darn, nor taste all that well, so I guess it's fine for them. But, I have keen senses and that's why I use Seventh Generation free and clear. Aside from getting the dishes clean, the biggest benefit is that you can wash carrots and potatoes, and other vegetables with it (I scrub them with the scratchy side of a Scotch-Brite sponge. It leaves no taste on them whatsoever. I try to use gloves when I do dishes, but when I forget, I notice this soap leaves my hands soft. It isn't quite as powerful of grease-cutter as Dawn and others, but it will get it off if you use a little more and scrub a little harder. With most dishes, it does a fine job. Also, it is more vicous than any dish soap I have ever used, so it takes a more to do dishes and I go through a lot of it. Think of the difference in thickness between non-fat milk and whole milk, and that's similar to what I'm talking about. That's why amazon having it in 6 bottle packs is good. I go through a bottle every month or two, so not too bad. I recommend this product. Some have complained about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Here's what the Seventh Generation website says: Seventh Generation uses SLS in our hand dish liquid, our disinfectants and our laundry liquids. Prior to using the SLS, Seventh Generation used sodium lauryl ether sulfate, or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), in our liquid laundry and liquid dish detergents. This is a naturally-derived chemical that comes from palm kernel oil and coconut oil. We do have a comprehensive document based on scientific data that we are happy to share with you. For document, contact Consumer Insights Team at Seventh Generation website. Truth about SLS and SLES Published 06/09/2008 11:32 AM | Updated 03/23/2009 12:53 PM Is it true sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) cause cancer, blindness, or hair loss?Neither sodium laurate (coconut soap), SLS, nor SLES is known to cause cancer, nor are they known to be teratogens or reproductive toxins. Neither do sodium laurate, SLS, or SLES cause blindness. They can be irritants, and the inflammation they may cause almost always clears in a few hours. This is also true of soaps. The booklet "The Truth behind the Ingredient Myths" produced by another natural products company, discusses this in greater detail. The Danish EPA has produced an excellent document that discusses household product ingredients, and SLS and SLES are discussed in Section 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. The discussion of toxicity and irritancy is quite detailed. The document is also a handy reference about other household chemicals.

We were about to run out of my favorite Dawn Ultra Concentrated Dish Liquid and because I was familiar with the Seventh Generations brand of Diapers, I decided to purchase their dish liquid in Lemongrass & Clementine Zest during a recent sale on Amazon.
There was some initial concern that shipping could get messy, but when I received them they were packaged VERY well and each bottle has a seal under it's cap to further prevent leakage. The smell was a very fresh, clean, citrus scent which was exactly what I wanted. The liquid although not as concentrated as what I am used to using, was still thicker than some I've used. When I did finally use some to wash dishes, I quickly found out that it IS pretty concentrated. Just a small squirt into the sink or on a sponge and I didn't have to go back for more for quite a while. With rinsing in warm/hot water, there was no leftover soap residue and even my plastics were "squeaky" clean.

I noticed the new formula (free and clear version) irritates my skin and my allergies to scented etc. things. I checked the label and online and guess what - this supposedly healthy product contains sodium lauryl sulfate - a chemical that has been reported to cause all kinds of health problems. If you have any doubts do a google search on SLS health effects.

Doesn't make baby bottles smell like chemicals!,

When my baby first started on bottles we used Joy liquid dish detergent to wash the bottles and they constantly smelled strongly of orange (and not in a good way - in a chemical way). We switched to this detergent and I LOVE it. Cleans well, no scent. I use it in a 50/50 mixture with water in my foaming soap dispenser and we wash our hands with it. I especially love that it is available on subscribe and save because when I realize I'm low I just go online - no special shopping trip!

Basic - simple - no perfumes - no fragrance and no adverse reactions for folks like me who are sensitive - Gentle enough to use as hand or body soap, even shampoo in a pinch, but still strong enough for dish washing. Highly recommended.

This used to be an excellent product. It was gentle and plant-based. The formula was changed. It is now harsh on the skin. It caused my hands to crack open and bleed and a rash spread up my arms. I notified the company about this, but got the usual "song and dance". Also, they changed the bottle cap. Now it clogs up with some kind of hard stuff which I couldn't even dig out.
