A swing and a miss for Seventh Generation, with these reformulated wipes. I just received my latest shipment, as part of my 1yr+ subscription. Was really surprised to see that the price went up (dramatically for me, because my Amazon Mom 20%-off deal just ended with this shipment), and the quality declined. I'm returning them, canceling my subscription, and switching to other wipes.

Previously the material in the wipes was a blend of polyester & rayon -- same stuff as in clothing. Now it's wood pulp blended with plastic resins (polypropelene and polyethylene). Feels like a wet paper towel. They're definitely not soft.

The top three ingredients in the previous wipes were: water, glycerin (a type of moisturizer), and citric acid (an alpha hydroxy acid, according to EWG's database). New ingredients: water, cocamidopropyl pg dimonium chloride phosphate (I've never heard of this before and EWG has no data), and sodium benzoate (a preservative). Why would I switch to a wipe that uses a chemical I've never heard of, and a preservative, too, before even listing something that would moisturize my baby's skin?

Neither of these changes strikes me as particularly "green" or "sustainable". That's greenwashing -- Seventh Generation is relying on their brandname to increase the price and cut quality, without losing sales. Too bad. I'm voting with my dollars against this reformulated wipe, and I'll be buying different wipes from now on.

****Revised June 28, 2013****:

Thanks Seventh Generation, for listening to your customers and bringing back the original baby wipes! I'm looking forward to giving them a good review.

Hi there-
This is Ashley from Seventh Gen. I wanted to let you know: the Original wipes are back! Check them out here:

Seventh Generation Original Soft and Gentle Free & Clear Baby Wipes, 350 Count (Pack of 5)

We developed our new wipe because we heard from lots and lots of consumers who wanted to be able to clean more mess with each wipe - so we created a thicker, more moist wipe. But we didn't realize what a loyal following our original wipe had. It was a hard lesson to learn and we are truly thankful that you raised your voice and demanded we bring back the product you love. So now, we're pleased to offer both - the original wipe and the new thicker wipe.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty. Like you, we are committed to products that help us care for the next seven generations. As always, we appreciate your feedback and invite you to contact our customer service team with any additional comments (dgl@seventhgeneration.com).

I've been using 7th Gen wipes for several years & am not happy with the new formula. They are rough feeling compared to the old ones and they are very sudsy and leave a sticky residue on my kiddos skin that after just a few uses has given him a terrible rash. I unfortunately was sent a case of these for my subscribe & save, had I known they'd be as awful as they are I would have sent them back to Amazon for a refund. I know some folks have complained that the old wipes were too thin and dry, but these are horrible in comparison. I've read the replies here on Amazon from the 7th Gen rep & I understand they were aiming for an improvement with this product, but they have failed miserably. I, like several other folks reviewing the product will be shopping for a different wipe.

Dear Valued Consumer:

We heard you loud and clear! Seventh Generation is bringing back our Original Baby Wipes so many of you have missed. And the best news is we haven't changed a thing.

The original wipe will be available in about 5 months. We're sorry it's going to take so long, but we have to start making them again which takes some time. They're likely to be available online first, but stay tuned and we will keep you updated!

Thank you for your feedback and loyalty. Like you, we are committed to products that help us care for the next seven generations.

I chose the 7th Gen wipes after trying out several different kinds. They were the only ones that *didn't* give my baby boy a diaper rash. He has sensitive skin. Like a princess. It's cool, it runs in the family. But when they recently changed the formula and packaging they stopped being gentle on his skin. Basically his little formerly-pristine butt now looks like pepperoni pizza.

Thanks, Seventh Generation!

Also the new bags are hard to open? I'm not drunk and I have all the usual fingers and thumbs and I still find them super annoying to open.

So far I am happy with these new wipes! I have been using seventh generation wipes for both of my children, not so much for quality but because of the lack of chemicals.
The second ingredient in this is "cocamidopropyl pg-dimonium chloride phosphate" which is a new one. I can not find much information on it, the cosmetic database has no info. After doing a quick search, I found this:

Ingredient - Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate
Purpose - Surfactant, antimicrobial
Adverse effects - Often used in surgical scrubs, it can cause contact dermatitis, sensitization.

I don't know if this is good or bad but my baby has had no bad reactions, I have found them to be of WAY better quality now, Before I would use 3-5 wipes during some diaper changes, now they are so much thicker and moist I get away with only needing 2 at most, they come apart easier too. There are 64 in this one compared to 70 from the old style but you use less so there really is no loss.
They look cute also, instead of a plain white wipe, they now have a sheep pattern on them.

Overall I am very pleased, even if there may be some questionable ingredients, these ones are worlds better then what else is out there.

For anybody that wants to compare ingredients:

OLD Ingredients
Water, cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose (plant-derived cleaning agent), glycerin (vegetable oil derived), citric acid (provides stability and pH balance), aloe barbadensis leaf extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E acetate), potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate (food-grade preservatives).
The wipe material used in this product is a blend of rayon (naturally derived) and polyester (PET)
