Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The first book in the Fabulous Five series, featuring the stars of Haynes's Taffy Sinclair books, delineates the concerns of anyone starting junior high school: one has to dress right, act right and hang out with the right people. Jana Morgan and her four friends who comprise the Fabulous Five club share these concerns. Rumors run rampant at Wakeman Junior High, and the Fabulous Five learn how gossip can create problems for everyone. Junior high also teaches the girls about friendships, new and old. Haynes effectively captures the fear, anxieties and joys of this age group, but her narration is inconsistent, sometimes including lots of detail and other times glossing over situations. An overly dramatic plot line and a soap opera segment are tossed in at the last minute, to introduce the next book in the series. The novel's ending is weak, but series-lovers will probably be hooked. Ages 11-13.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun girls' series!, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Seventh Grade Rumors (Fabulous Five, Book 1) (Paperback)
Seventh-graders Katie Shannon, Beth Barry, Christie Winchell, Jana Morgan and Melanie Edwards are about as different as any friends can be. But they have one common goal: beating their snobby, sneaky classmate Taffy Sinclair at her own tricks.

With that in mind, they banded together in elementary school, calling themselves The Against Taffy Sinclair Club. But at the start of junior high, the five friends have renamed themselves The Fabulous Five, as they encounter four snotty girls from another elementary school who call themselves The Fantastic Foursome.

Each of the girls battles the typical junior high issues, ranging from unfair parents, bratty siblings, baffling boy behavior and school rumors. But as long as they've got one another, The Fabulous Five is sure they can get through anything that comes their way...

5.0 out of 5 stars Once a teenager, September 30, 2005

This review is from: Seventh Grade Rumors (Fabulous Five, Book 1) (Paperback)
I read this series when I was younger, it was by far my favorite! Like other people have said in reviewing different Fab Five books this is also the first series of books that I read willingly and really got me into reading. My favorite authors today are Maeve Binchy and Nicholas Sparks. I never liked the BSC series, they didn't spark my interrest the same as this series did. Too bad that these books are not in print, I only bought a few of them as a child and I would love for my little girl to read these someday!
