'Seventh of July, Sunny Day' - a literal translation of the original Japanese Title of the film - was almost a culmination of great hits from this increasingly popular J-Pop band, Dreams Come True (or DoriKamu for short). If ever a CD was to showcase a group of artist's flexibility in terms of genre and style, this one is a remarkable example of how Masato Nakamura can expertly compose and arrange the songs into an aural journey crossing styles and genres with an unmistakable Japanese twist. Combined with Miwa Yoshida's excellent grasp of the English language and her sensational vocals which would be at home on any R&B, Dance, Rock, Country, Pop, (you name the genre and she can do it) track and you have pure Japanese excellence. Bucking the trend of including dodgy English lyrics as a distraction from an inability to sing, this band can deliver in both areas. And full on! Yoshida doesn't take any prisoners as she belts out the title track focussing on the popular love story that forms the basis of the 7th of July Tanabata celebrations which became the inspiration for the film. She also doesn't let go of the listener's emotions when delivering such power ballads as 'Winter Song' and 'Suki'. And neither can you help going with the rhythm, so well-matched to her voice, of the mighty catchy and extremely pleasing 'Happy Happy Birthday'. What is incredible is that this isn't just a soundtrack to a second-rate Japanese film. This is an exhibition of the best DoriKamu have to offer, and their potential for worldwide reknown with their innate sense of rhythm, melody, genre and style. I bought this as a replacement of my original CD which got irrepairably damaged - a testiment to how important I think this album is to world music and, indeed, the world of music.
