Book Description

In a time and place when the faithful looked to a great and terrible goddess for their salvation, a young mother is plagued by feverish dreams about her late husband, jeopardizing her health and her new marriage. Her current spouse goes to the temple to pray for her recovery but, once there, is enthralled by one of the priestesses of Inanna. The web of desire also ensnares the priestess, who considers forsaking her sacred vows to stay with this man who already has a wife and family.

All three look to the goddess for guidance. Will Inanna smile on them -- or is it her will to destroy them?

An exotic ancient setting and mythological elements that draw on the traditions surrounding Inanna, Enki and Gilgamesh will appeal to fans of ancient-world or middle eastern romance, including the works of Michelle Moran, Kate Quinn and Stephanie Thornton.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

You may be familiar with speculation that Mary Magdalene was a temple prostitute before she shook off her seven demons. In our culture, the idea of sacred prostitution seems so strange that it piqued my curiosity. After reading and ruminating about what the lives of such women might have been like, the seeds for my novella Seventh Sanctuary sprouted. For a couple years, I wasn't sure where the story was going -- if anywhere. Then a second idea, inspired by myth, germinated into sort of a subplot for the first. Suddenly, the book erupted into being.

I'm not sure how to classify Seventh Sanctuary. The story is in many ways about the spirituality of sex, and there is quite a bit of sex in the novella, but I wouldn't call it erotica. The depth of emotions of the characters makes it more romantic or possibly even literary. And the goddess Inanna is important to all of the main characters, so you might say that she is the inspiration for the story. For me, ancient goddesses are a source of wonder, nostalgia, grief and inspiration. Hopefully, that awe comes through in the book.

About the Author

Jennifer Malin inherited double copies of the bookworm gene from a mom who reads voraciously and a dad who once spent his downtime writing in the crane he operated.

Her first two novels, As You Wish, a time travel, and Eternally Yours, a ghost romance, were originally published by Jove (Penguin Group USA). After that, Jen's love for Jane Austen led to several works set in Regency England--one from Leisure Books and three from Zebra. In recent years, her fascination with archaeology inspired The Five-Day Dig, a contemporary mystery/romance set near Pompeii; Seventh Sanctuary, a steamy novella of ancient Sumeria; and Templum, a time travel featuring a modern heroine and an ancient-Roman hero.

Her new novella Wish I Might is the prequel to As You Wish. Next up is the third installment in the series.

Jen and her husband, Martin, an Aussie ex-pat, live outside of Philadelphia but travel to see ancient ruins and Formula 1 races as often as they can. She's an art enthusiast, a fan of film, and the proud aunt of three amazing nephews.
