Book Description

After alien ships have invaded the human territories, destroying planets and sending the survivors fleeing to Earth, the Terran government orders the refugees to settle a new planet. One that has just been terraformed.

Jeff Koenig, one of the few survivors from the Delious system, leads a team of scientists to the planet Dauphin to rebuild his life. They have 70 days until the ship returns with the first wave of colonists, but from Day 1 everything goes wrong.

As the days count down, the colonists watch the skies and pray that the Hurluk won't find them, or Earth, before they are rescued.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of this world! June 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The title says it all; this story is out of this world. Literally... In the space of a few pages Liana manages to bring you on a trip into a world where politics mix with space travel, and just like our own world, when the government gets their hands on something, it usually goes poorly.

Add in a dash of danger, terraforming, volcanoes and a little love, and you get a great read.

This story is a short, so be prepared for a couple unanswered questions, but perhaps one day Liana will consider taking this world to new heights, and more pages!

The characters could easily have supported a longer work. I enjoyed listening to the bicker about the terraforming process, what was safe, what wasn't, with the growing sense of doom either from the skies above or the earth below. Only a couple of "Huh?" moments where you have to say "I choose to enjoy it." The best judge of it, however, was that at the end of it, I wanted to see more interactions between these characters, a greater depth to the conflict than the short form could support. That's a pretty good sign.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong science fiction with a great voice August 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For only being 6,000 words, this story really packs a punch. Brooks delivers with strong voice and great characters coupled with excellent and believable science. Loved this story!

Short Sci-Fi book poignantly illustrates why cutting corners when it comes to world-building is best avoided. Very good characterizations on both sides of the likeable/unlikeable equation made for some tense moments as the group try to determine their best means of survival as the world they have tried to manipulate falls apart around them. Book doesn't end with day "seventy" so be prepared to wonder what comes next as it ends on a cliffhanger. One I did enjoy!

More About the Author

Liana Brooks once read the book GOOD OMENS by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and noted that both their biographies invited readers to send money (or banana daiquiris). That seems to have worked well for them. Liana prefers strawberry daiquiris (virgin!) and will never say no to large amounts of cash in unmarked bills.

Her books are sweet and humorous with just enough edge to keep you reading past your bedtime.

Liana was born in San Diego and in addition to there has lived in Illinois, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Kansas. We'd like to tell you where she is right now, but last we checked she was researching books on both Alaska and Africa.

Not only is the Amazon algorithm breaking trying to track this lady, but we can't tell you where to mail that daiquiri. Your best bet is to try Twitter where you can often find @LianaBrooks talking about her four kids, her giant dog, and plans for world domination.
