Book Description

April 30, 2009
Several Gravities is the first published collection of Keith Waldrop's radiant collages, revealing an essential aspect of this internationally acclaimed poet's multi-faceted ouevre. Like his collage poems, Waldrop's images are enveloped in ghosted impressions, quiet tensions, and fragments of dream. Traces of memory gesture toward the absent and the invisible, evoking a vivid, mesmerizing world rich with contradiction and ambiguity. Several Gravities features a substantial selection of collages in full color, an incisive essay by editor Robert Seydel on Waldrop's work, its expression of the poet-artist tradition, and its expansion of the collage form, as well as an essay by Waldrop on the relationship between his distinctive visual and poetic practices.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...And in April, Siglio Press, the indie in Los Angeles that last year published Joe Brainard's The Nancy Book, released the equally beautiful and exquisitely designed Several Gravities, a collection of Waldrop's collages. In an essay in that book, the volume's editor, Robert Seydel, describes the seventy-seven-year-old artist-poet-publisher-translator as: that rare figure, a poet's poet, inherently graceful in his utterance, in both poetry and prose, and somewhat hermetic, sage-like, very beautiful in his hesitations and quiet delivery of both self and poem. The kind of writer, in other words, who gets swept along in a current of popular interest and whose work, thankfully, fulfills the promise. --Kevin Larimer, Poets & Writers

About the Author

KEITH WALDROP is the author of over two dozen works of poetry and prose, an eminent translator, and, with wife Rosmarie, founding editor of Burning Deck Press, now in its 47th year of publishing influential and innovative writing. His many awards include two NEA fellowships and the rank of Chevalier des arts et des lettres from the French government.

In the last fifteen years, Waldrop has published fourteen titles including The Real Subject: Queries and Conjectures of Jacob Delafon with Sample Poems, Haunt, The House Seen From Nowhere, and with Rosmarie Waldrop Well Well Reality and Ceci n est pas Keith Ceci n'est pas Rosmarie. In 2009 UC Press released Transcendental Studies, a virtuosic triptych of simultaneously metaphysical and personal collage poems, which reconcile Waldrop's romantic tendencies with formal experimentation.

He has also translated almost two dozen volumes of poetry, including works by Charles Baudelaire, Edmond Jabès, André Breton, Paul Éluard, and by many contemporary poets, often as part of Burning Deck's Serie d'ecriture. Wesleyan University Press has published his innovative translations of Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil and Paris Spleen.

Waldrop s visual art has had a parallel life to his literary career: his collages have graced the covers of numerous books and have often been featured in literary journals. He is currently the Brooke Russell Astor Professor of the Humanities at Brown University where he has taught since 1969.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of the work of Keith Waldrop, spanning across several mediums, May 6, 2009
This review is from: Several Gravities (Hardcover)
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but there are some things that can't be conveyed no matter how many words you have. "Several Gravities" is a collection of the work of Keith Waldrop, spanning across several mediums. Including his visual artwork with collages in particular, his poetry, and his prose stylings, his work is presented here with commentaries from the editors. "Several Gravities" is worth the consideration for fans of art and the artists. "Amen Silence": like stars/intimate//days and/dull becauses//atmospheres/ultimate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Palmer's review of Several Gravities, April 10, 2009
This review is from: Several Gravities (Hardcover)
This juxtaposition of prose commentary, verse and collage is a fascinating and illuminating work in itself. Several Gravities also serves as a bright window onto the landscape of Keith Waldrop's poetics and creative life. It is suffused with his ineffable mix of gentle irony, humor and incisiveness, a tonal palette I have much admired across the decades of his deeply imaginative engagement with poetry, prose, drama and the visual arts.
