5.0 out of 5 stars Research Supported Treatment Interventions, August 8, 2008
By
This 2nd edition of the Severe and Persistent Mental Illness Treatment Planner has been revised to include Evidence Based Treatment (EBT) Objectives and Interventions. The latest research evidence has been integrated into the content of most of the chapters. Those Objectives and Interventions that go beyond "Best Practice" to being based on replicable reseach results are highlighted with an EBT symbol. Now the reader can be assured that all the latest research has been reviewed and suggestions for treatment based on successful results are noted in those chapters where research evidence exists. Where there is not sufficient research evidence available for a presenting problem, best practice interventions continue to be suggested. As federal funding sources as well as some other third party payers are beginning to insist on treatment based on research evidence, this Planner offers just such Interventions.

Please be reminded that all of our psychotherapy suggestions assume a compassionate relationship of empathy that is crucial for effective treatment. Good psychotherapists realize the critical importance of a therapeutic relationship while delivering research informed treatment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally Helpful, February 5, 2010

These manuals provide a practical structure for thinking about the treatment planning process, although will likely need some tweeking to fit your own clinical needs. The I found the interventions listed a bit too detailed for most tx plans, but still a good model for those who need some help with how to descibe what they do. I found it to be an excellent training tool for those new to the necessity of writing well organized plans. A thoughtful use of this material should please any regulatory agency.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great series!, July 19, 2011

I train our agency in improving their clinical documentation and have used this book to provide examples of appropriate language. It is separated out by clinical symptom or issue and is well organized. This particular book fits our client population best, so we use it the most.

Though this series is written with a therapist in mind, it is easy to adapt with some language tweaks. It would be great if Jongsma et al could write a section of some interventions that are case management focused!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but for new practitioners just starting out..., June 10, 2011

This is a very helpful text for mental health practitioners. I use it regularly in practice. It is vital, along with the companion Progress Notes Planner, for surviving in a managed care environment that seeks to deeply limit or, much preferrably for insurance companies, eliminate completely, the provision of mental health care for the populace through a strategy of burdening the provider to the point of withdrawl from practice. No provider, no service's provided. Very simple equation.

Having used the first edition and reviewed the second, there is substantial similarity. For those new practitioners just starting out, with limited financial resources, enormous student debt, and desperately trying to build a practice, while limiting start up and ongoing overhead costs, given the substantial costs of professional books, a used first edition is completely workable for your new practice or first or second agency employment position.

This is a great book and very helpful with my MFT program. I highly recommend checking this book out if you are a graduate student in the social sciences field, are working with the mentally ill or if you work in behavioral healthcare field directly with clients.
