About Sevylor
In 1948 in Vitry, a small suburb of Paris, France, Berco Grimbert created an electronics company called Societe Electronique de Vitry, or SEVY for short. Soon, a friend of Grimbert's from New York commissioned SEVY to produce high frequency welding machines capable of fusing a new material called PVC (poly vinyl chloride). SEVY's machines worked very well and the American friend developed a very successful business manufacturing swimming pool related products. He then taught SEVY how to work with PVC.

One of the first PVC products SEVY produced was inflatable bathtub called Dou Dou. It was an instant hit in postwar France--mothers could bathe their children even where no facilities were available. The media hailed Dou Dou as a significant invention. Soon, SEVY added small pools and flotation devices such as rings, beach balls, and inflatable swim jackets to its product line. Safe, hygienic products, made of PVC and designed for portability, durability and convenience, became the SEVY trademark.

The company quickly outgrew its small facilities in Vitry. Mr. Grimbert accepted an attractive offer from the French government to take over a defunct textile factor in the tiny Alsatian village of Buhl. After establishing its new headquarters, the company added the letters "lor" to its name, and became Sevylor. In French, l'or means gold. By coincidence, or possibly fate, Sevylor has proven to be "as good as gold" to its owners, retailers, consumers, and employees.

I used to rent molded plastic kayaks (dimension and old town brands) and loved them - very comfortable with great back support. However, my kayak rental place went out of business, so that was no longer an option. The plastic kayaks weigh 50-70 lbs, which are really to heavy for me to carry alone. This one weighs 20 lbs, and I can easily carry it. Also, I worried about where to store one of those kayaks. So, I bought one of these to try it out.

It inflated very quickly with a pump attached to my car's lighter socket. I was impressed with the strength and stability. However, being similar to a raft, it does move quickly in the direction of the wind when the wind blows, so you need to compensate a bit. Also the seat is inflatable, which was fine for about an hour but after that my back needs better support. It deflated quickly, and I store it (with paddle and life jacket) in a laundry basket, which is very convenient.

Overall, the kayak is remarkably sturdy and fun. I enjoyed it so much I bought a second one to bring a friend, then she got another 3 for her family. You can't beat the convenience of storing and carrying an inflatable kayak, and I would be surprised to see a better one on the market. But, it's not as comfortable (back and leg support) as the molded plastic ones of my past.

I purchased a SeaSense SeaSense - Sea Sense X-Treme Deluxe Kayak Paddle paddle, which is very good. I also recommend buying a pump for kayaks or air matresses (not a compressor which is too strong and could damage the kayak), either rechargable or one that plugs into your car lighter.

This is a great value for the price, and you can have a lot of fun using it.

Updated 7/3/08 - I have used this for more than a year now and am even happier than at first. One day I left my kayak to dry on a bench, and when I retrieved it I created 2 holes. The next time I went to use it both sides were somewhat flabby but there was NO CHANCE of it sinking, due to the multiple separate compartments containing air. I was still able to maneuver quite well. When I got home, I used the included patch kit which totally fixed the problem.

Also, the large valves on the sides are easy to work now that I know what I'm doing. Open to the large hole when deflating; open only the small hole to inflate.

If I could change my rating I would definitely give it 5 stars - it's soooo worth the money. Enjoy!

I did plenty of online research looking for an inexpensive, durable and attractive kayak to paddle around on the lake accross the street from my new home. I found a lot in common with all of the sevylor kayaks that were reviewed - great quality and low prices. I went with the Bali becuase it was small, one-person, light-weight and the right price.

I couldn't be happier with my choice. The inflated kayak is better looking in real life, and the quality is excellent. I can easily walk the 1/4 mile to the boat launch area with the kayak on my shoulder.

I would recommend this kayak to anyone looking to have fun on a lake or river for a great price. I'm going to by a couple more for guests and visiting family.

I bought this kayak to go with a friend down a river. He didn't tell me we were going down class 3+ rapids. I ended up scraping across rocks and thrown into brush, but the little kayak never had a problem. I can't guarantee that for you but I've gone back to that river every other weekend this summer and it's still paddling strong. I can't see taking it on long paddling excursions but down a river, on a lake or even small surf (with the optional fin). The Bali has great bang for buck value. Beats renting
