I ordered this, and it is just basically just a mini sewing dictionary. It gives terms and defines them.. and recommends what you should have in a sewing box... no real details on how to sew. The only nice part is the project cards that it comes with. If you are wanting to LEARN to sew and learn different techniques... this isn't what you should get. Disapointing.

This book is ok for learning to sew. there are so many free tutorials online, that you can use to learn how to make things. You don't HAVE to spend money on a book. BUT, this was a nice resource for sewing terms, great picture cards and sewing tutorials. But i haven't used any of it, besides the sewing terms.

There are a lot of good projects, but a few more steps would make the final results look better. Here is a link to a tote I made from the book [...]

This is a fun non-threatening resource to introduce cool sewing projects to a beginning sewer. Plus, there are projects an experienced sewer will enjoy. --Each project has directions that fit on 3 sides of glossy half-fold cards that fit in the case they come in. A little booklet provides more detailed information about techniques referenced on the direction cards. There is a great photo of each project for inspiration. I got the book and all supplies to make 2 of the projects and gave as a gift. --For one item, I got double the materials and tested the beautiful sheer+brocade table runner --simple and very successful. Projects are a nice mix of home dec, simple fashion and accessories. In some ways having to switch between the project cards and the techniques booklet makes things a bit more complicated; on the other hand the method lays out simply the overall steps in making each project and as one learns the specific techniques one would refer to the booklet less and less. --And for more experienced sewers --instructions are all elegantly simple.

I bought this for my granddaughter who's just beginning to sew. The projects are easy, the instructions are precise, and it lets a novice succeed. It would be encouraging for anyone just beginning as the booklet discusses terms, tells you what you need in a sewing box, introduces you to a sewing machine, different stitches, ironing, patterns, cutting the material and methods of assembly. There are twelve pamphlets giving complete instructions with pictures: layout, finished project, needed material, and sewing instructions. The only clothing pamphlets are for a tube top and a skirt. The others range from a scarf to a tote bag. Well worth buying.

First, I have not purchased this product, yet. However, as an accomplished seamstress I think this would be a great, fun gift for someone interested in starting to sew for himself or herself. Over the years, so many of my friends have expressed interest in having me teach them. Because of time schedules, this has never happened, but I am thinking of giving out this book to them to illustrate how easy it would be for them to start. Especially since nowadays there are so many decent beginner sewing machines under the $100 price mark.
