Book Description

December 1, 2011

Kawaii is the Japanese work for cute, adorable, or lovable. Cuteness is a large part of the Japanese culture from Hello Kitty, which emerged in the 1970s, to the cute mascots of today's banks and airlines. Kawaii arises from the need to have a little bit of child-like innocence and naivete in your life, regardless of age or gender. You'll see kawaii mascots for companies like Sanrio, San-x, Tokidoki, and even the Tokyo police force. Kawaii has grown all over the world to inspire cute, iconic characters that are eye-catching in their simplicity.

This book is packed with super-cute sewing projects that you'll actually want to make! Though the instructions are simple enough for a beginning seamstress to get dynamite results, more advanced sewers will be impressed by the variety of projects and the quality of construction. Easy-to-use step-by-step instructions, photos, and patterns guide you through the creation of 22 fun and simple sewing projects. Sidebars throughout the text wil fill you in on techniques to add to your sewing arsenal. Organized from easiest to easy, you'll find clear instructions to sew accessories, simple clothing items, stuffed animal plushes, and great items to decorate your room. You'll be surprised by how easy it is to sew these awesome projects - all that's needed is this book, a sewing machine, some inexpensive fabric, and a few other basic sewing tools. The hardest part will be deciding which project to start on first!

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectically Cute July 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
Sew Kawaii! features "22 Simple Sewing Projects for Cool Kids of All Ages". The contents are very eclectic - ranging from key chains and wearable accessories, to toys and home-decor. All of the projects have a touch of "Kawaii," which is the Japanese word for cute, adorable, or lovable, and have the feel of the Harajuku style found on the streets of Tokyo. It is a unique style full of bold colors and chunky shapes. Whether you are looking for a trendy gift for a little one, or are bold enough to wear her ponchos with ears, Choly offers a wide range of projects from which to choose.

The book is broken down into difficulty levels: Very Easy, Easy, Experienced Beginner, and Intermediate. There are a variety of projects in each category. Choly reviews the basic information you need to begin, including fabric information, basic sewing tools, and technique information. Each project is shown with full color step-out photos and detailed instructions given in both traditional and metric measurements.

Sew Kawaii! Towel CaddyMy personal favorite project was the Towel Caddy. The jellyfish purse is also quite cute (and did you know that Kurage is jellyfish in Japanese? There are lots of simple words translated to Japanese along with her projects...) The plush animals would make great hand-made gifts for a baby shower or new baby as they are not only soft and whimsical, but small in size, and have no components that might come loose and be potentially harmful.

Sew Kawaii! also includes patterns for the projects shown. Basic knowledge of sewing techniques and sewing machines would make creating the projects a bit easier, but Choly does guide you through different stitching options on both a machine and by hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for kid crafts and summer fun! March 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
What a fun book! With 22 different patterns to choose from, there is definitely something for everyone. :) I love to make things and especially to make things for kids.

This book has six different chapters with multiple projects in each. They are:

Key Chains
Storage Accessories
Wearable Accessories
Plushies
Clothing
Home Decorations

I have to admit that I didn't like ALL of the projects, but the ones that I did like, I LOVED.

Among my favorites are the towel caddy and the electronic cases. I also think that the strawberry key chains and the octopus plushies are adorable.

Each craft has complete instructions and all of the patterns are full size in the back of the book. Each of the instructions have a level of experience needed to make the items. Most of them are beginner.

With bright colored photos and step by step instructions, Choly Knight makes her patterns easy to read and to follow.

Great for kid crafts and summer fun!

Many thanks to Fox Chapel Publishing and NetGalley for my review copy of this book. All opinions expressed here are mine.
