This book describes how to take easily obtained, inexpensive materials and, without power tools, create a custom fitted sewing table and then it shows how to adjust that table to make working with a large project, such as machine quilting a large quilt, easy and comfortable.
If you have any stress, fear, or hesitation about becoming a machine quilter, it is my greatest hope that this book will help you. The information presented in this book is intended to make sewing and quilting as easy and as comfortable as sitting in your favorite chair and reading a book.
However, this book is not for someone who is unwilling to rethink their environment, nor is it for someone who must have a gorgeously finished "showroom" type of sewing area.
My suggestions are based on comfort and efficiency, not looks, and I am completely budget minded. I believe in what I've learned from quilting for fifteen years and from teaching quilting for twelve years. I am confident in my experience over any furniture salesman's and I am all about "sewing painlessly" over "looking like it came out of a magazine".
Lastly, I think "one size fits all" is the funniest joke I've ever heard. It doesn't work with clothes or shoes and it certainly isn't true of sewing tables. A quilter who is 5'2" is not going to fit comfortably at the same sewing table of a quilter who is 5'11" - and it is my firmest believe that we all deserve to sew in comfort, in an area fitted perfectly to each of us, and that's why I've written this book.

More About the Author
Hi, my daughter Sarah Raffuse and I wrote "Crazy Shortcut Quilts" together in 2006. In 2011 I wrote "Sew & Quilt in Comfort" because of all the attention my custom table was receiving and I recently published "Finish (almost) Any Quilt" which teaches how to finish up abandoned quilt projects and how to adapt new quilt projects to a quilt-as-you-go technique that helps you FINISH your quilts your way, easily. No more unfinished tops; no more of being afraid to quilt them! This book guides you through it all :)

This review is from: Sew & Quilt in Comfort: How to inexpensively create and customize your sewing and quilting area to fit you perfectly (Paperback)
This is an amazing book for those quilters who want to transform their quilting space without spending thousands and thousands of dollars! The ideas are doable and functional and would fit any budget. No your sewing room won't look like it fits in a magazine but you will be quilting in comfort and without pain and that is what is most important. There are so many great tip and ideas in this book I was just amazed at what I learned. I would highly recommend this book!

Valuable information & ideas,
This review is from: Sew & Quilt in Comfort: How to inexpensively create and customize your sewing and quilting area to fit you perfectly (Paperback)
This book is not about how to decorate your sewing room, but rather how to aviod problems from long periods of sewing and constant sewing that many of us do. Wish I had read this information before I needed shoulder surgery because of the heighth of the sewing machine. I would suggest reading it before problems show up. Her ideas are practical and not a budget buster. If you have experienced pain etc then this book will have ideas how to correct the sewing space and avoid further pains. Sewing and quilting are too enjoyable to cause physical damage and be uncomfortable. I would definately suggest reading this book. I plan to make a few changes to my sewing space asap! Good to share with a new sewer/quilter and start them off on the right foot for more enjoyable sewing.

versatility and stor-ability,

This review is from: Sew & Quilt in Comfort: How to inexpensively create and customize your sewing and quilting area to fit you perfectly (Paperback)
When I look in my sewing room now, I am pulled in to the room to work on my current projects with enthusiasm knowing it is a comfortable arrangement for me. Most of all I love the versatility and stor-ability of the foam. As Marguerita demonstrates throughout the book there are many ways to set up your work surface. I have two favorite setups; it is very easy to switch between the two. The foam is so light, it is no problem to change things around for the task at hand. When not in use, it can all be placed in a closet. The information in the book is very well laid out. Marguerita is very clever and so generous with sharing what she has learned. She does not give you formulas but rather leads you through looking at your sewing area and the way you work to find the ergonomic set up that will work for you. She states early on, this book is not for everyone. "I am completely budget minded," she says. This is true for me as well. I enjoy using things in alternative ways from their intended purpose or giving new life to something rather than discarding it. On page 48, Marguerita has a tip to "Put pretty pictures, bits of fabric, pattern pieces, quilt blocks, calendar pages, wallpaper remnants or anything you like to look at under the vinyl to brighten up your sewing and quilting area." The book is full of tips that Marguerita has learned.
