I haven't tested the S/PDIF connectors, and it may be a long time before I need them. The rest of the hardware seems to function properly. However, the Windows drivers (7.12.8.2140) are a nightmare: written and released around 2009-08-xx; never updated; never fixed. The control panel fronting the drivers is partly indecipherable, but you'll need it if you want to be able to switch "system input"--by which it seems to mean the actual USB DAC functionality--between 1/2/3/5/8-channel functionality. Windows can't handle this itself, up through 7 SP1. I plan to test on Linux.

The box appears to be based on a C-Media 119-series core (at a guess: SIV ([...]) reports "C-MEDIA ELECTRONICS INC. CM106 Like Sound Device"), and as such, this unit is basically identical to any other unit Amazon sells that advertises itself as a USB audio anything with the same set of ports. Unfortunately, rummaging through other vendors' sites yields exactly the same drivers.

Since it's a USB 1.1 device--disregard any claims of USB 2.0 speeds--the best you can expect is "DVD" (48kHz, 16-bit) sound if you need this for a surround sound setup. If you're playing back or recording mere stereo audio, you can play with up to 24-bit depth and 96kHz sampling.

Examples of devices identical to this "Sewell" unit are: StarTech.com External USB 16BIT 7.1CH To Audio Adapter Sound Card, Diamond External Xtreme Sound 7.1-Channel USB Audio Device,

I just got into a new apartment, and didn't have the money to straight up buy a home theater PC. I have a computer near enough to the tv to run a cable along the floor... so now i run 2, my video and my audio. both of them are perfect, and now i can watch netflix in HD with surround sound. it sounds great, the sound quality is really better than the price tag would have convinced me. the bass really hits hard, and the highs and mids are great. i'm an audiophile of sorts, not super hard-core, but an audio enthusiast, and this Sewell SoundBox worked great. i bought for the price, and stayed for the quality and ease of use. this is so easy my wife can use it with her laptop too, when she wants to hear some loud pandora or slacker radio on our home theater system. i recommend.

Hey guys I don't normally do reviews but I'm posting this since a lot of issues with the soundbox software wise. I was ready to return this thing until I finally broke how to get 5.1 from my computer to a S/PDIF input. The first thing you will need is a VLC player from here: [...] . It is not required to setup the soundbox to 5.1 but you will need it if you want to run videos in 5.1. While you are installing vlc get the drivers for the soundbox from here: [...] . It is under support and then click windows installer. You will not need to run the cd that comes with the soundbox. Just install the driver from Sewell's website. After it is installed(you may need to restart your computer) go down to the audio icon in the taskbar at the bottom right. Right click on the audio icon and click playback devices. You will see at least two devices called "Speakers" and "Digital Output". Right bellow each device it says "usb multi-" something. You will need to disable "Speakers". Right click on "Speakers" and hit "disable". Next you can right click on "Digital Output" and hit properties. Here you can click "Supported Formats" and highlight DTS or DD and click test and it should play each speaker to prove it is running 5.1. Now you have setup the device. Now to play your videos you will use VLC Player. Once the video starts right click and go under audio>audio devices> A52 over S/PDIF. There now your video/movie is running in 5.1 sound. Remember this is if you want to run it under S/PDIF. Otherwise the device works great and audio is clear. The blue right is annoying but hiding it does the job.

It's major flaw is that it doesn't do what it says in the tin. i.e. it won't push multichannel 5.1 or 7.1 over the optical output which is what I've bought it for in the first place....

To add insult to injury, before buying I did send an email to the sales dept asking if it would do it only to get a vague response that the box will do 7.1 (not explicitly that it would do it over S/PDIF) attached with a copy of the manual (no reference in there either).

Other than that it worked right out of the box, no drivers where needed (Win XP, SP3) and windows automatically switched the sound and mic functions to the box.

Shame about not doing multichannel over optical. Sound quality from the analogue ports is nothing special, don't expect audiophile performance from a 40euro device....

Out of the box, it installs as one would expect any USB device now a days to: easily. Surround worked with files that supported it. But, I was initially dismayed by not having any equalizer or surround functions. However, I found the same product made by Sandberg and used those drivers instead.
[...]

I now have a 10 band equalizer, additional surround modes, and other options.
