Book Description

May 1, 1999
Sewing Basics is extremely helpful for someone just learning how to sew or someone getting back into sewing. It guides beginners through the entire sewing process, from preparing the fabric to mastering challenging techniques.

Details such as deciphering the back of a pattern envelope, setting up a cutting surface, and using a seam ripper are fully explained for the novice. Ordered seeps help sewers construct basic, simple garments that will suit any style, while full-color photos and drawings illustrate important points in each process.

Chapters progress from making the simplest of pull-on skiers and pants through to jackets, with new techniques introduced along the way. Handy troubleshooting rips help beginners avoid and correct mistakes. Every garment will turn out just right with the help of this essential reference, and even a novice will learn the skills to tackle any sewing project.

Anyone who wants to sew but doesn't know where to start will find this a friendly and complete guide.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Moyes teaches beginning sewing classes at The Sewing Workshop in San Francisco, and this book is designed to make much of the content of her workshops available to the beginning sewer learning at home. In fact, the last chapterA"Making a Kimono in Five Easy Lessons"Aduplicates one of her five-session beginning sewing classes. All instruction is project-oriented, as the reader moves from pull-on pants and skirts to T-shirt, tops, and vests to easy blouses and jackets. Without including an overwhelming amount of detail, Moyes covers each step of the garment-making process, using color photographs and line drawings to advantage. An excellent choice for public libraries and sewing collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners, November 26, 2011
This review is from: Sewing Basics -OSI (Paperback)
This is one of four must have reference books on my sewing table. It was my first sewing book buy many years ago, and it is still a great reference for things I forget or times when the pattern sheets are not quite clear.
The tone is warm and professional as if the author is a big sister who takes teaching you to sew seriously, but still wants you to have fun and enjoy the process. Some of the clothes are dated, but the techniques are timeless. This book is very detailed step by step for basic garment construction to the point that pattern sheet instructions are almost not needed for many things. For beginners, it is well worth the price new or used.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I am teaching my daughter in law dress making techniques. I looked at several sewing books before I picked this one. I wanted BASIC SEWING knowledge. I learned sewing in school "back in the day" when actual sewing with a machine was taught. I am very happy with this book. From showing how to do bias bindings, to putting in sleeves to do hems it was just what I was looking for!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, September 18, 2011
This review is from: Sewing Basics -OSI (Paperback)
As a rank beginner in sewing, I checked out a bunch of "how- to" books from two libraries.....10 to be exact, including the readers digest and singer versions. This little book was the best of the lot in my opinion. Clearly written, with nothing extraneous; good pictures and reasonable- looking clothes to make. I made the kimono which turned out well. Am going to get my own copy to keep. Highly recommended.
