Book Description

November 3, 1996 0134967534 978-0134967530 2

Hands-on in approach, this book/workbook introduces the most current methods, techniques, terminology, and equipment used specifically in sample room sewing (as opposed to home sewing) which simulates mass production procedures. Using step-by-step instructions, illustrations, and varied projects, it guides readers through a full range of techniques from the fundamentals of sewing to the more advanced procedures. This book uses a workbook format with projects and clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations of the fundamentals of each project. Assesses different parts of a garment based on mass production methods used in the sample room. It demonstrates sample room sewing techniques appropriate for different manufacturing procedures highlighting their importance in the relationship of design to the final garment. This book covers not only the standard way of doing a project, but presents short-cuts used by designers in the sample room and compatible with factory procedures highlighting the highest level of requirements for sewing a quality garment. It greatly expands content to include additional tools, and additional fabrics, sample room layout, and introduces the current techniques used for modern tailoring of women's coats and suits.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book describes factory sewing of 20 years ago, July 14, 1999

This review is from: Sewing for Fashion Design (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
As a custom dressmaker and a sewing author, I was dissapointed with this book and returned it to Amazon. I was hoping for an overview of modern fashion industry processes with specifics on machinery, techniques, and materials. What I received was a rather amateur, very basic set of beginning sewing instructions. There are far better basic sewing books on the market that sell for far less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a great sewing book!, October 30, 2007
I found the above review amuzing due to the fact that they bought a book published more than 20 years ago and wanted modern fashion tips. With that aside, this is a great book, full of information that will never change with sewing a garment. IT's also great if your on a budget. You'll get everything from this book and probably more than any of the "modern" books out there. I'm an instructor at an NYC sewing school and I highly recommend this book.
