Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Beginning with clear introductory sections on supplies, safety tips, getting started, and basic stitches, this book offers even neophytes the opportunity to create the featured crafts and gain the skills they need to branch out creatively on their own. The projects range in difficulty and application, and patterns that can be enlarged are included for many of them. Directions for making games, clothing, and ornaments are clearly presented and illustrated, and there are crafts related to Christmas and Jewish holidays. The photographs are attractive as well as instructive. The borders and backgrounds showing the many samples of felt pop from the pages of this well-organized how-to book.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. This large-format craft book, illustrated with bright photos, provides ideas, lists of materials, and step-by-step instructions for making 60 projects with hand-sewn, appliqued, and embroidered felt. The book begins with discussions of supplies, safety tips, advice on organizing the work space, and the nitty-gritty of cutting felt, threading needles, knotting thread, and making eight different stitches. The excellent photos clarify construction and show the finished products. Each project is clearly labeled according to difficulty. The hippie headband is rated "Very Easy," the crown is "Easy," the wizard's hat is "A Little Harder," and the checkerboard set is downright "Challenging." Though McAllister conscientiously provides safety warnings and suggestions for adult assistance, the instructions for the mask-making project should have told children to remove the felt mask again before using scissors to enlarge the eyeholes. The book's spine looks normal on the outside, but its interior spiral binding allows the pages to lie flat on a table when hands are engaged in crafting the objects. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep Young Hands Busy!, December 12, 2004
[This review was first published in the "Ephrata (Pa.) Review."]

Bright felt squares, needle, embroidery floss, scissors. These four basic materials and a child's hands can create 60 practical items for personal use, decorations or gifts.

Labeled "very easy," "easy," "a little harder," and "challenging," the projects include games (tic-tac-toe and checkers boards), household items (coasters, placemats), apparel (vests, baby bibs), decorations (Christmas tree skirt, mobiles) and toys (beanbags, puppets).

The book's format is kid friendly. Its binding allows the large pages to lie flat. Instructions are numbered and clear, and each craft is generously illustrated with large photos. Instructions for basic stitches and patterns are included.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Be Better, February 26, 2008
I am disappointed in this book as it has very few projects. Too much money for so little information.
