If you are the least bit interested in constructing your own lingerie, don't waste your time on any other book, this book is the best!!Don't bother with books about nylon tricot. This book tells you about all of your fabric options. There is even information on using bed sheets! While other books stop at camisoles and half slips, Sewing Lingeries that Fits covers the mysterious subject of bra fitting and construction. And if you are into frou-frou and embellishments, there is even a section for you covering dyeing, beading, embroidery, etc. This book has lots of photos and lots of information crammed into it's 144 pages. GET THIS BOOK!!

A wonderfully inspiring book,

I have to say I have a nice library of sewing books and this is one of my favourites!! It delves deep into the topic, has lots of inspiring photos and clear, concise instructions. If you like beautiful lingerie, want to try your hand at sewing something new, create one-of a kind garments, this book is great. One unique thing about this book, is while this book goes into depth about specialty lingerie fabrics, it also gives great ideas on how to use regular fabrics in ways you may not have considered. It also gives instructions on how to adapt regular commercial clothing patterns for sleepwear and how to draft some custom underwear patterns. Just inspirational and great!!

Pretty, not practical,

Although this book has the beautiful layout of all Taunton books, it unfortunately lacks clarity. Many techniques desribed left me pondering how they actually work. The book does have some good general advice on selecting fabrics, and some possible ways to personalize your work. It might be worth a look, but the author seems to have some trouble when it comes to specific explanations. I'd be interested to see if anyone could figure out how to do a "turned lace hem" from the instructions.

Great reference,

I have owned this book for several years and refer to it often. It's probably best for sewers with some experience. I have tried most of the techniques and they all work well. If you're serious about sewing lingerie, you will enjoy this book, read it through, and refer to it again and again. There are instructions for drafting a few basic patterns and options suggested for changing the basic designs. There are also directions for copying your favorite ready-to-wear intimates. The section on making bras, which is the reason I bought it in the first place, is quite good. One reviewer said she didn't know where to buy bra-making supplies, guess she didn't see the resource guide in the back of the book. Another reviewer said the patterns weren't "sexy", but the text gives lots of suggestions for changing the designs to suit one's personal taste. (Anyhow, this is a technique book, not a pattern book.) So, buy the book. It's worth every penny if you really like to sew and want to make some lovely things for yourself!

Great Ideas/Tips,

If you're into sewing your own lingerie, this is a great book to have in your own personal reference library. There are great tips on how to sew lingerie fabrics and what sewing techniques work best when constructing lingerie. Info is given on where to purchase patterns and supplies. It's the most comprehensive resource section I've seen on lingerie supplies yet!
I really like this book for the info on altering patterns and there are instructions for how to make your own patterns for a panty, slip and camisole. The techniques covered in this book include seams, edges, elastic and straps. I agree with one of the reviewers who stated that for those new to sewing, the instructions are a bit difficult to understand. I think that the "Singer Sewing Lingerie" (1991) book does a much better job of explaining lingerie sewing techniques. [The pictures are better too] Yes, this book does cover bra construction. It's excellent! So, if you want to try making your own bras, this book will definitely help. You'll need to purchase items from lingerie suppliers if you can't find them in your local fabric shop though. However, my one gripe about this book is that it just covers basic, rather boring lingerie items. But, this book is just to get you started with sewing lingerie. Once you've gotten the basics down, then you can move on to the more seductive items. However, I've yet to find a book on how to sew the more titilating types of lingerie. Hope one will come on the market soon! Overall, I highly recommend this book. The ideas on embellishment, dying, beading and other finishing touches is terrific! I got really good ideas from it and have been able to buy inexpensive lingerie and really bump up the look, the sexiness factor of simple garments!

Great book, a wealth of information. Beautiful photographs to inspire your creativity. The author does a great job at explaining lingerie techniques. This book is a great addition to any sewer's library.

I checked this book out from the library, read it cover to cover and have decided that I must own this book, as I believe it will be a great reference tool for me. I like to sew my own clothes, and love the idea of making my own camisoles to wear instead of buying them (I am a hard fit).
I will say that you do need to understand how to sew. Another reviewer said the book was not clear--but I found it to be otherwise. I thought it was very well written, but I have been sewing for years.

a great book for making comforable lingerie, but...,

I bought this book hoping to learn how to make my own lingerie so I could stop paying out the nose for tiny bits of fabric and cheap lace. While this book features a lot of very useful information on fabrics and sewing techniques, I have been disappointed by the selection of styles included. If you are wanting to make "granny panties" and camisoles, this is a good book. If you're looking for patterns for something more sexy, though, they're certainly not here. If you are an experienced seamstress you can make your own modifications to achieve a sexier look, but I don't recommend this to beginners. I must say, though, that there is a very good section on making your own bras that is highly recommended.

Good for advanced sewers, beginners might have trouble,

Beginners may find some of the instructions difficult to follow. I don't know where to find some of those lovely parts to make bras with--that's something I've long wanted to do, and previous attemps to make really good bras failed. I have taken their advice and used patterns and my own ideas for lingerie, but one day I want to draft my own French panty pattern. It takes a little measuring and drawing, but once you make your template I'm sure it works fine. I have used one of the Vogue shirt patterns they list for a pajama shirt (eliminating the cuffs on the sleeves), got another pattern for the bottoms, cut up an old sheet and trimmed the PJ's with a little lace. Looks great, and wasn't that difficult.

I bought this book because it was recommended by a sewing friend. It's not a bad book, but I was looking for something with more detailed descriptions of how to sew lingerie. I think it's a good book to have in your sewing library, but not a first nor only one. I have one of the old Singer series books on sewing lingerie that's better. It has lots of luscious photographs of how to complete steps. This book has fewer pictures demonstrating techniques, etc. As I said, not bad, but there are better books out there.
