5.0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU AMAZON FOR OFFERING THIS FABULOUS BOOK!, August 30, 2000

This review is from: Sewing Luxurious Pillows: Creative Designs for Home Decor (Hardcover)
I received my copy of "Sewing Luxurious Pillows (Creative Designs for Home Decor)" today. I opened the package, and sat down in my new recliner (one of the reasons I purchased this book), and began looking through it. I had thumbed through the first few pages, and I knew I had picked a winner! I was, for lack of a better term, impressed, not only with the vast selection of pillows that I can create using this book, but also with the very detailed instructions for crafting the fantastic pillows featured. The directions (including the illustrations) are invaluable for any seamstress. If anyone is looking for a book of pillow designs, this is it! It has designs and ideas for any taste and decor, from simple to luxurious, from art deco to Victorian. I especially liked the "how to's" for creating tassels and trims. I can't wait to get started!

2.0 out of 5 stars hmm, didn't I see this already in another Linda Lee book?, September 27, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sewing Luxurious Pillows: Creative Designs for Home Decor (Hardcover)
Just got this book yesterday, and I sat down eagerly to read through it. What a disappointment! Briefly, here's why:

1. CONTENT: That's funny...I recognized most of the photographic illustrations for "Techniques for Sewing Pillows" from another one of her books, "Sewing Edges and Corners." Unlike that book, however, there is no step-by-step layout (one photo to illustrate a technique will have to suffice, folks. Too bad for all you visual learners out there!). Nor is the book designed to lay flat for ease of use. Which brings me to...

2. BOOK DESIGN: Techniques, illustrations, text, photographs are laid out helter-skelter. Sometimes I'm not sure what a photograph is referring to in the text (or vice versa). Looks pretty if you're not reading it, not so nice if you're actually trying to make something.

3. MISLEADING PREMISE: This book says it is about sewing. I say it's mostly about inspiration. Without clear steps, patterns (or at least an idea of a pattern), appropriate fabrics, suggested amounts of fabric/materials, and a list of materials needed, how can anyone duplicate what is seen on these pages (or pull this and that from), without just making a best guess? For example, the book demonstrates how to make a flange. Where is the picture with the finished product using this flange? How do you know how long the flange should be? What do you do when the two ends of the flange meet up? (Oddly enough, this technique is mentioned for corded piping and twisted cord, but you're on your own with the flange!).

For your money, you get five "patterns" (but little directions): a cube pillow, a ball pillow, a triangle pillow, paper bag pillow, and star pillow. Note, none of these patterns are for the posh-looking "luxurious pillows" in the majority of the pages, they are just for the "unique shapes" section at the end of the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just for learning how to sew a basic cushion, June 17, 2003
This review is from: Sewing Luxurious Pillows: Creative Designs for Home Decor (Hardcover)
When I decided to order this book, I presumed that I will find lots of ideas for cushion designs.

To my dismay, it only explains how to sew some of the basic known designs of cushions without offering any new ideas.

If you just want to learn how to sew a cushion, this book is suitable, otherwise, you will be better off buying normal decor books for new ideas.
