5.0 out of 5 stars New writer.
A tight, quick but never shallow little book that shows how the private eye story should be written. This is the first offering from this fellow, and I hope he has a lot more like it in him. Merck Bayern is a likeable guy with just enough flaws to make him a real person, one you'd like to shake up and down once in a while.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Sewing Machine Murder
I've heard other people say that they will read a book if the first line on the first page is catchy. With this book, it was the first line of the fifth paragraph on the first page, that I thought catchy. But no matter which line was catchy, this is a very delightful book, fast to read and full of colorful characters. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a light, fun,...

5.0 out of 5 stars a modern-day, old-fashioned detective novel, April 6, 2001

I found this book very enjoyable. The plot had enough twists and surprises to keep it moving. The writing was fresh and yet familiar at the same time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Sewing Machine Murder, by Joe Carufe of naples, Fl, May 29, 2001

The pages of the Sewing Machine Murder just about turned themselves; it was an entertaining, easy and effortless read. Michael McGrorty is from LA and it shows in the richly described Hollywood setting of this fast-paced murder mystery. The lead character, Meryck Bayern, is cleverly sarcastic, and the supporting characters are real people but not boring. Unlike many detectives in a murder mystery, Bayern is not the stereotypical tough guy, but rather a conscientious intellectual who prefers a pot tea over a pint of whiskey. Pick up a copy of and read the Sewing Machine Murder, and the result will not be a mystery: my guess is that you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and well developed, April 29, 2001
This review is from: The Sewing Machine Murder (Paperback)
In The Sewing Machine Murder, Michael McGrorty has intricately woven a collection of stories with a touching cast of all-too-human characters. Without a doubt, Merck Bayern was put on this earth to solve mysteries, but his natural talent and dry wit hardly deter a never ending parade of angry cops, bill collectors and con artists hot on his trail. A memorable overview of the private eye business.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sewing Machine Murder, June 27, 2001

"The Sewing Machine Murder" is a fine little mystery. The author, Michael McGrorty, holds the attention of the reader in a Mike Hammer type style that is definately something to look forward to in each chapter. "The Sewing Machine Murder" has plenty of intriguing characters. Some of them seem simple in their presentation but once McGrorty unveils the mystery, their true character becomes known. If you want to read a uniquely written impressive little mystery check out "The Sewing Machine Murder" by Michael McGrorty!

This L.A. story has been done a thousand times before in fiction and film. Nothing to learn from this little novel.
