Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This book is very helpful, even if all the sewing you do is limited to reattaching buttons. San Francisco sewing instructor Vasbinder knows exactly how to set novices at ease while also providing near professionals with a handy reference. After all, sewing machines are an investment, as are the time and care needed to produce good-looking clothing. Two sections and 10 chapters cover the must-know details. One section, Tools and Equipment, includes not only machine purchases but also notions, trims, marking and cutting, and other items. Section 2, Solutions and Tips, is all the rest: fabric, pattern, sewing embellishment, fitting, and finding solutions. The organization is superb: each topic is described in general, then followed up by information on where to get materials described, what every sewer should know, and varietals. Sidebars answer most common queries, such as how often to clean a machine or change a needle. The tips alone supply the kind of information most sewing books don’t necessarily include—about pincushions and why you need them, for example.Well thought out and executed for sewers and aspirational crafters. --Barbara Jacobs

As an accomplished seamstress and someone who has previously worked at an independent fabric store for 6 years, I can enthusiastically recommend "Sewing Solutions" as a great sewing-room reference for ANYONE who takes up the needle and thread! Ms. Vasbinder's book has everything you might ever need to know in one place, and this book would have been a GOD-SEND when answering the questions of customers at the fabric store (which happened every shift that I worked).

Lovely pictures and crystal-clear diagrams explain fabrics, tools, terms, and sewing machine parts in the first half of the book ("Tools and Equipment"). The second half of the book ("Solutions and Tips") deals with technique, and is a solid primer (or reminder) for all of those things that you might need to do to finish a project, but might never have done before (or did a thousand years ago). Need to decipher a pattern envelope? Apply velcro? Sew on a button or snap? How about applying an invisible zipper after years of not knowing how? Maybe you've been tempted to make your own bias tape - Nicole shows you how, and with all of the current tools and tried-and-true methods.

The book also gets extra points for being expertly organized and clearly written. The text is friendly and factual, which is just what is needed when you're having a sewing meltdown. Helpful cross-references also tie the valuable information in this book together. For example, the tutorial for installing an invisible zipper includes page numbers for other entries on zipper feet and suggested seam finishes you might need for this zipper technique - how wonderful!

What if you're a long-time sewist and you think you might not need such a reference? You might be very pleasantly surprised.

I bought this book after reading the good reviews. I was disappointed as the book is clearly for novice sewers and as I have been sewing for a few years, there was nothing new in it for me.
It explains how to thread a machine, sew a seam and sew buttons among other things. The pictures are very small and even if I wanted to distinguish between braided and knitted elastic it is impossible.
In addition the print is a bit small and printed in light grey instead of black that makes it hard to read without a bright light.

As a novice self-taught sewist, this book is exactly what I needed! I was so pleased to see that it is very comprehensive and covers sewing topics that I didn't even know existed. The instructions are easy to follow and the photos and diagrams are beautifully done. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but especially to my fellow beginning sewists who are ready to take their skills to the next level.

I wanted an updated sewing reference and this one is quite comprehensive. The illustrations and explanations are clear. I was disappointed in it's small size (6" x8") especially for my senior eyes. I think a spiral binding would make this book easier to use while sewing, but it's still a great resource.

I pre-ordered this book and was very excited to receive my copy. I found it to be the perfect size to place in a book holder right next to my sewing machine table for reference! I have been sewing for many years and found much of it to be very good review and even found some of the tips to be a fresh perspective. I laughed out loud several times at some of the descriptions. This book has it all, humor, expert advice, and I love the cross-referencing.
Especially helpful were the fitting sections and the sections about specific machine feet, basic machine threading and maintenance info. I'm going to recommend that all novice sewers put a copy at their fingertips whenever they sew; likewise I'm going to recommend experienced sewers keep a copy on hand for quick reference too! There's no substitute for good tools. I rank this book among the best tools I own.

This is a real gem of a book. It covers all a beginner would need to know but also have lots of information for more experienced sewists. The book is beautifully laid out and the pictures are a treat. Although other reviewers have commented on the type used being too small, I like the fact that the book is compact in size. It makes it easy to have the book next to your sewing machine AND you can read it in bed. What's there not to like?

I have been sewing garments, home dec items, and quilts for more than 40 years, and after reviewing "Sewing Solutions", I have to say that if you are looking for a book to solve sewing problems that you face, the best book is "The Sewing Answer Book", by Barbara Weiland Talbert. She answers a wide range questions, such as "how to select the best size needle for a certain project", "When should I use a French seam, and how do I make one?', questions about working with patterns, etc. If you are looking for a comprehensive and user-friendly guide to sewing, there is no better book out there than the "Reader's Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing". It has step-by-step techniques for making clothes and home accessories. Sewing Solutions, while it is an okay source, I believe that the other two I listed are much better.
