Directions are bad, steps are left out and confusing.

I would happily give this book 4 or 5 stars if the patterns were not overlapping.

Of course, some people might want bags like this, but I don't.

The bags are great. The details and information , although on everything from zippers, eylets, bag hardware to binding and such is good. The patterns and bags are not for kids ( sorry other reviewer for disagreeing ) BUT almost every bag shows a way to make the bag kid friendly. Almost all of the bags are for adult and although most arent my particular taste in fabric, They can easily be used with any fabrics for a variety of looks. OVERALL the bags are fantastic, the instructions and how to use the baffling ( for me ) hardware used to make bags made me want to jump right in. I couldn't wait to make the bag on the cover..... Till I pulled the "full size" ( as stated in product description ) pattern out.... WHY ??? The patterns are on two heavyweight papers OVERLAPPING. I have such a difficult time with overlapping patterns, My brain does not compute them and it is difficult to trace. I want to dive into my crafting and the hardest part is getting the dang pattern. She does offer downloadable / printable patterns - but my printer is not working. Grrr. I will pay more for a pattern book that actually has a full size pattern. If overlapping patterns don't bother you then this book is great. But to me it ruins the purchase.

I didn't buy this book here in amazon. I got it from a book club. Since then I've sewn three bags from one of the patterns: the customizable crossbody Bag. I plan to make others soon. I like how the author shows different options on the bags so you can customize yours. She shows some examples on how to use the pattern to get your creative juices flowing. You can learn how to use stenciling and appliqué in your bags. The bags in this book are not the same you see over and over elsewhere. Yes there are some models that are appealing to youngsters but there's something for everyone, look at the bag in the cover!! One thing is constructing a bag and another one is styling it and the author shows you how to do both. You can choose to make the bag simple or styled. The pattern sheets have the patterns printed in layers but are easily identified by the use of numbers and color coded. I like to keep the original patterns untouched and copy them with transfer paper so that I always have the original unharmed for future use. There are also different levels of difficulty and bags for different needs. I didn't give 5 stars bacause my opinion is that a begginer might need more detailed instructions. But if you've sewn bags before you can easily follow the instructions given.

I was disappointed in the bag designs in this book. I would not describe them as "chic" or "high-end." There are many animal-shaped bag options that apparently are intended for children, and others that are somewhat "off-beat." It would be helpful to have the "look inside this book" feature in order to be able to see photos of the bags before buying this book.

This book was extremely disappointing. I thought the bag/purse designs were not good at all and I wish I could have been able to see pictures of the bags beforehand. The majority of the bags essentially look like deformed stuffed animals/monsters and no adult I know would carry one of these around (imagine a duffel bag with a cat head on one end). Although the bag on the cover is fine, most of the other patterns just look like bags that toddlers would like to have. Of course, some people might want bags like this, but I don't. Please show some pictures of the bags in the future so potential buyers know what they're getting.

The bags are cute, but the instructions are seriously terrible. It skips steps and the pictures in the instructions on how to assemble the bags are poorly done because it only shows sewing, not what each piece should look like when it's being put together.
I am a beginner, and although the book has bags for all levels, I find the easy or beginner bags just terrible due to the lack of instructions.
And the patterns are awful. They overlap so you have to trace them.
I don't recommend this book for a beginner.

Choly Knight's book is full of great ideas and versatile patterns. Despite the other reviewer's claims that the patterns are juvenile, there are actually options to make each bag more stylish or decorative. And I may be an adult, but I would totally carry a purse with a pirate cat face on it. ;-) There are also patterns for stencils to embellish your creations. Detailed explanations of hardware, interfacing and their uses round out the directions. I don't like the overlapping pattern pieces, I would have preferred a cd with the patterns on it instead, but a sunny window and some freezer paper should take care of that detail. I plan to make several of the patterns from this book.
