I learned to sew in 3rd and 4th grade, and won the 4-H district contest. My Mom was a patient teacher along with the 4-H instructors, but this was 40 years ago on an old "White" machine that was just beyond the treadle model. During my high school and college days, I sewed just a few things. Mother died, when I was 24. So I lost my teacher. I started sewing again about a year ago and added serging, but had forgotten a few things and still had a lot to learn. I went with a friend to help teach some precious ladies in Nicaragua to use a machine. I did fine with the basics-patterns, material grains, and sewing. But, I learned a lot of easier techniques from my friend and realized that there were more efficient ways of doing things that could make sewing even more fun. So, I headed to the library. This is one of the books that I found. At first, I started taking notes to build a little book of helpful hints. Then, I realized that I was trying to copy about 1/4 of the book. That's when I decided to find the book, and I did. This will be an often-used book in my little sewing library, until I get a lot more experience. There are a lot of little helpful hints like how to make bias strips from striped material without taking hours to match the stripes, storage ideas, needle information, different type seams, ways to use reinforcements, making shoulder pads or enforcements, waistband, pocket, button, easing techniques, and more - all with very helpful illustrations. I really like this book.
