This is not my first purchase of a Sewline Mechanical Pencil. I keep these pencil close by whenever I use my sewing or embroidery machine. They are my favorite marking tool.

I recommend this item anyone who sews whether it is crafts, apparel, embroidery, or quilting -- this mechanical pencil from Sewline is a (if you will pardon the expression) a God-sent.

This fabric marking pencil works fantastically on both cotton prints and wool fabrics. On wool fabrics, such as for applique penny rug-type crafting, a very light touch is preferential to a firm touch. A more firm, even touch works nicely on cotton prints. This pencil has been highly recommended by Jan Patek of Jan Patek Quilts, and I totally agree with her. It gives a fine, easily removable line for both applique, stitch delineation, and needleturn applique, in addition to regular fabric marking needs for sewing. The line is finer, narrower, than of a tailor's chalk. I found the ceramic markings to be easily sponged off with a damp paper towel or cotton cloth. I recommend this marking pencil highly. Though pricier than the typical chalk pencil, it's well worth it to me.

I hand quilt and on light fabric I mark with a regular #2 lead in a mechanical pencil. Dark fabrics were a problem until I found this pencil. The ladies in my guild use white chalk markers, but the lines are too thick to quilt a nice, even line. This pencil is perfect. The line is thin, very clear, and lasts as long as I need it. I've never had any line showing when finished; I guess it naturally wears off as hand quilting is done. Mine came with a refill tube of white leads. I think I've seen other colors for it, but am not positive. I found mine at a quilt shop, but am happy to see them available on Amazon, especially since I'm always trying to buy for gifts for my quilting friends.

Really happy with these marking pencils. I have tried many with varying degrees of success and these are now my most favorite. I bought both the white and dark pencils and both work very well. One thing I had to adjust was the pressure I apply when using these pencils. I had gotten in the habit of having to apply a lot of pressure to get usable markings but that isn't necessary with these pencils. They actually work better with less pressure.

Marking dark fabrics is always a challenge. Until now, I've used tailors chalk to mark darks, but the marks are thick and imprecise when working on small areas. This pencil, though, is just the ticket. I ordered it based upon some of the good reviews. If anything, the favorable reviews undersell the value of this product no matter how many nice things they say. I don't like to over compliment items that I review, but I am compelled to say that, after searching for and trying many different solutions, this pencil solves the problem so completely that I'll not ever need another marker for dark fabrics.

Here's what I like about this product:

It leaves a thin mark. The benefits of this should be obvious.

It marks easily. Some chalk-type markers require a firm press to make a mark, but this only requires a light touch to leave a good mark.

It's a mechanical pencil. I love mechanical pencils. It's easy to use. There's no need to sharpen.

If you sew at all, you'll appreciate this notion.

The Sewline white marking pencil is a must have for marking on dark fabric. Gives a clean sharp line with very little pressure, and erases easily. Five stars for the white! I'll give the black lead three stars, as its no better or worse than any cheap mechanical pencil. I just purchased the yellow, and give it zero stars as it does not show on the fabric at all, even when used with a heavy hand. Strange how the various colored leads are so vastly different.

These things have got to be the most "unreliable" pieces of JUNK I've every tried to "wrestle" with in my entire life! I do a lot of quilting, and I've purchased numerous ones over the years and they work fine until it comes time to refill the color sticks. I follow the directions EXACTLY and have even gone to the owner of the quilt shop, where I buy my fabrics, and she can't even get them to work! Her response is "buy a new one!" For what they cost, they're NOT WORTH IT! Spend your money on something less expensive.

I am disappointed and have promised myself that I will not buy one more white/light fabric marker. It barely shows up. There must be some technical reason this kind of marker is so hard to produce, because I've tried at least 6 or 7 different types and always have the same result -- barely able to see, if at all. This does not apply to the darker markers, but if you have dark fabric, good luck.
