More About the Author

Carla Hegeman Crim, founder of Scientific Seamstress LLC, is a molecular biologist turned patternmaker. Although she was born and raised in the South, Carla has lived in Upstate NY, New England, the Midwest, and is currently planted on the East Coast. She has a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Virginia Tech, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University. She is a self-taught seamstress who has been experimenting with fabric since she was a wee little girl. When her son came along, she decided to stay home with him and build a business out of sewing. For the first few years, she focused on elaborate clothing and furniture designs for collector dolls. She had many requests for her patterns, and began publishing them in 2006. She was one of the first authors onYouCanMakeThis.com, and has worked with members of the YCMT team on a number of collaborative works. She is currently working with fabric designer Jennifer Paganelli on a series of Sis Boom patterns for children and adults. When she isn't in her sewing lab, Carla enjoys gardening, yoga, and spending time with her family.

I was excited to learn Carla has another sewing book to add to my collection! I'm a big fan of her E-book patterns, and this is a great collection of all sorts of hat patterns from different designers. Having the patterns available in downloadable PDF format is a great addition to my sewing library, I can print off only the size I need and reprint if needed, no flimsy tissue patterns! And because each pattern has multiple descriptive photos with the instructions, each one is a mini sewing lesson.

I love this book! No, it isn't cluttered up with a wad of folded tissue paper pattern pieces for me to unfold and sort out. The PDF pattern format is by far my preferred method of sewing. I can print out only the pieces I need, when I need them. I never have to worry about losing pieces or tracing pieces or only being able to cut out one size. I find it much easier to print a few sheets of paper and tape them together. If I lose a pattern, I can print a new one. The author Carla Hegeman Crim has been my favorite designer for many years now. Her instructions are clear and thoughtful and so easy to understand. This book has so many options of fun hats to make. I look forward to years of hat making ahead of me!

Well, she's done it again! Carla always has the most fabulous patterns - from the incredibly detailed instructions to the downloadable and printable patterns, they are hands-down the best I've used!

Let me tell you what I love about the downloadable patterns: you can print them as many times as you want - in any and all sizes you want! If it's a pattern I know I'll use over and over again (and trust me - Carla's patterns are ones that you'll want to use again and again!) I will print it on cardstock for extra durability. SO MUCH better than flimsy tissue paper patterns where once you cut the one size you need, the other sizes are useless unless you want to trace each size separately. Yuck! Who has time for that?

I am thrilled with all the options and variations that this book has to offer! Endless possibilities for adorable hats!

First of all I own almost every pattern Carla has written and love them all!! She explains everything in detail making the patterns great lessons for beginners but they are perfect for experts as well. Sewn hats provides access to all of the patterns in .pdf format on the website, you only need to print the pattern and/or size you need, and no need to do any tedious tracing as you can always print again if needed. The hats in this book are so fun, I can't wait to try them all!

I just started sewing a few years ago and the only patterns I use are pdf patterns written by Carla C. I love the step-by-step directions she provides and by saving the pdf's to my computer I can simply print out any size I need any time. I look forward to making my first hat soon!

I got this a few weeks ago and am super excited to get to work on this! I just wish I had time to sit down and sew!

This book is great and has such detailed instructions on how to sew each and every hat. And there are SO MANY DIFFERENT HATS to choose from!!!!!

Carla strikes again and oh boy! this time with hats!

FYI, all the patterns are downloadable, not in the book, but, let me tell you how awesome this is. This means that when you've used the pattern until it is falling to pieces, you just recycle it and print it out again! I love printing my own patterns. Plus, with Carla's books, she gives you SO many options on each item, that you find yourself printing things multiple times anyway!

The hobby of the week is hats! And SEWN HATS has so many hints and tips and tricks for me to make any kind of hat to fill every hat desire I have.

The patterns are simple and clever. Although that patterns aren't included have its hits and misses. If you don't have constant access to a printer and computer, this book may not be for you, unless you're not lazy like me and can draft evey single pattern. I do appreciate that because the patterns are online and can be saved onto a desktop, there is less paper waste out there and I only need to print the patterns to the hats that I want.

There is a hat for every season and flair options for every style. I look forward to a whole new world of hat wear opening up for me!
