Editorial Reviews

Review

“The dresses are just lovely. Adorable!” —Kate Moss

“I love Their Nibs’s clothes because they make little girls look like little girls.” —Thandie Newton

“Is there any new parent who has not looked for the clothing of yesteryear to dress their newborn or toddler? This book has all the basics to create those clothing that are so sought after. I can see the patterns filling many baby shower gift needs as well as enhancing wardrobes of the many young children in our families.” - Debbie Colgrove, About.com Guide to Sewing

“All patterns are charming and fashionably influenced by the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.” – Apron-icity

“Patterns in a more classic mode that make children look like children instead of tiny adult women. A fine array of traditional looks for toddlers and young children. Bell selected fabrics with a vintage ambiance so the designs in the book have an ageless ‘feel’ that channels the 1940s and 1950s.” - Bangor Daily News

“A beautiful collection of classic children’s clothes and accessories that anyone who loves to sew for little ones will adore. The styles are inspired by the classic designs of the 50s and 60s, and really are timeless.” - FabTalk

“With a special little person in your life, whether your own or a grandchild, niece or nephew, this book is sure to entice you to make something mini. The styles and patterns address the idea of children dressing age appropriately, perhaps with a bit of nostalgia found with the full skirts, smocking, rickrack and other retro details.” – Sewing.org

“I have to say, I love it. Not only are there beautiful dresses for little and big girls alike, there are practical and cute items for boys as well (and by that I mean, clothing that you can put on your little boy that they won’t argue about wearing). To top it off, there are a number of unisex items included… a little something for everyone!” – Stacy Schlyer, StacySews.com

“My mother and I flipped through the book together, oohing and ahhing and sighing at each beautiful design. The proprotions, the details, the styling, even the fabric choices in her examples, are all spot on. These are the clothes that will never go out of style." - CraftGossip.com Sewing Guide

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart, or the inexperienced April 23, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the idea of this book. There are several super cute patterns that I wanted to try and there is a good variety of boy and girl patterns.

I bought this book to make my daughter the 1950s Pin-Tuck Dress for Easter and have spent the last week and a half dealing with the worst drafted pattern that I have ever come across. I read the reviews and at the time the only comments were that some of the pattern pieces didn't match up and that the directions were poorly written. I am fairly experienced and can put up with badly written directions, but the pattern itself is drafted completely wrong. I contacted the publisher and the woman wrote back that, yes the pattern is drafted wrong, but no they didn't have a fix for it yet.

One of the major problem include the pin tuck pattern piece. It is drafted to the size it should be once the pin tucks are in place. If you are skilled enough to pin tuck your fabric as directed in the pattern, before you cut out the piece, it seems to work out. The materials list calls for 2" elastic for the back waistband, but the pattern piece is only drafted at 2". Once you take out seam allowance you either need to redraft the front and back waistband wider or use narrower elastic. I also had to re-cut the front waistband as it wasn't long enough. The ties are drafted much wider than the waistband. I just left them wider as I had lost the will to care by that point.

I won't get into the problems with the directions, but be prepared for a little trial and error (and maybe a few swear words).

That said, after a very stressful time, I managed to make a very cute dress which is why I give it a very generous two stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous dresses, adorable boys outfits! January 8, 2011
By wendy
Format:Paperback
This is simply the best children's sewing book I have ever seen on the market. First, almost all the projects are actual garments for kids from baby size up to 8 years old. There are several absolutely fantastic girls dresses using amazingly beautiful details and fabrics. I've already made the precious tulip shaped dress, and the silk chiffon dress is up next.

In addition, it has some very sweet outfits to sew for little boys- dungarees, two styles of button front shirts, pajamas, etc. This is wonderful since boys often get the short shift in sewing books.

The full sized patterns are in PDF on a CD at the back of the book. I had no problem printing them out from a mac laptop, then taping them together. The patterns are well worth the small bit of work.

All projects have mulitple pages of well written and illustrated instructions, key for putting together these great projects.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sewn with Love, Not best patterns to use April 15, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a certified Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, professional dressmaker and retired university costumer. I've been sewing 43 years. I figured I could make the 1950's pin tuck dress in a flash. Very poor pattern drafting. The layout for the tucks is deplorable. I'm very disappointed because of the hype for Fiona Bell. Here it is the week before Easter I've cut one dress already out of silk dipioni and I will be stuck redrawing a pattern for 2 little girls that I have promised dresses for. (I knew inside I should have done a muslin makeup)
I can see a novice throwing in the towel and never sewing again if they are counting on the instructions given in this book.
