Jack Boulware takes a lurid romp through this playful age, looking back at a time when nudity in films was new, swapping and swinging were sweeping suburbia, and everyone at least pretended to be a player. Filled with photographs and memories of the brief glimmer of naughtiness that followed the sexual revolution and preceded the AIDS epidemic, Sex, American Style is endlessly amusing in showing how freedom of expression allowed people to be silly.

This is a pretty thorough and informative look at the sexual habits of America from the 70's to the present. Most of the reading is interesting and fun, and the photographs of old magazine ads are great. After a while, however, the author's cynical, condescending tone started to grate on me. For instance, regarding hot tubs: 'soon California was deafened by the sounds of old growth redwoods falling to keep up with the demand. And of course, hot tub owners soon realized you had to occasionally clean out the filters, whch would become clogged with pubic hair and other human mange'. A little of this goes a long way, but it seems like Boulware ends every example in the book with a similar disclaimer. I found it read best in small doses.

Alas, I was only ten years old when the 70's came to an end, too young to have experienced any of the grown-up delights celebrated in this wonderful book. But as a record of those times, I've never seen a more thorough and all-encompassing tribute than Sex, American Style, and have never read anything that's ever made me want to go back in time so bad. A few minor errors here and there, but nothing that distracts from the overall giddiness you feel looking back on the highlights of this delightfully decadent era. Plaid leisure suits aside, it's a shame those days are long gone; but since they are, let this book be considered a definitive reminder.

Has Jack Boulware been reading my mind? I'd like to think so. Funny, sexy, and just plain good horse sense. I purchased two copies, one to read and one safely sealed in plastic. The seventies have come and gone, but Mr. Boulware has given us a gift, nay, a treasure-tool to keep them just arms reach away from a trip down memory lane. Ah, to sleep purchance to dream. Peace.
