informative but cynical,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sex, American Style: An Illustrated Romp Through the Golden Age of Heterosexuality (Paperback)
This is a pretty thorough and informative look at the sexual habits of America from the 70's to the present. Most of the reading is interesting and fun, and the photographs of old magazine ads are great. After a while, however, the author's cynical, condescending tone started to grate on me. For instance, regarding hot tubs: 'soon California was deafened by the sounds of old growth redwoods falling to keep up with the demand. And of course, hot tub owners soon realized you had to occasionally clean out the filters, whch would become clogged with pubic hair and other human mange'. A little of this goes a long way, but it seems like Boulware ends every example in the book with a similar disclaimer. I found it read best in small doses.

A joyous, visual feast!,

Alas, I was only ten years old when the 70's came to an end, too young to have experienced any of the grown-up delights celebrated in this wonderful book. But as a record of those times, I've never seen a more thorough and all-encompassing tribute than Sex, American Style, and have never read anything that's ever made me want to go back in time so bad. A few minor errors here and there, but nothing that distracts from the overall giddiness you feel looking back on the highlights of this delightfully decadent era. Plaid leisure suits aside, it's a shame those days are long gone; but since they are, let this book be considered a definitive reminder.

Sexy and F-U-N!,

Has Jack Boulware been reading my mind? I'd like to think so. Funny, sexy, and just plain good horse sense. I purchased two copies, one to read and one safely sealed in plastic. The seventies have come and gone, but Mr. Boulware has given us a gift, nay, a treasure-tool to keep them just arms reach away from a trip down memory lane. Ah, to sleep purchance to dream. Peace.

This book should make all happy hetero's stand up and give a collective cheer! This book is jammed packed with everything and more one would ever want to know about the greatest decade for sex in the history of mankind-- the 1970's! Rarely has a book so thoroughly covered the era's hedonistic sexuality with such gusto. Little care is taken to not offend the late 90's PC crowd and that in itself puts the book head and shoulders above similar fare. If you lived it, want to re-live it, or want to experience sexuality in all its 70's glory, read this book!

I came of age (no pun intended) during the Sexed-up Seventies but unfortunately didn't partake of any even lukewarm love action for reasons too numerous and too pathetic to recount without using all of this website's available memory. Boulware's book certainly captures the era's mood, aspects of which I experienced only peripherally at the time. However, the book contains the slipshod proofreading that has marred other recent Feral House publications. Misspellings, typos, factual errors, and layout gaffes interfered with my enjoyment of Boulware's heterohorniness study. I apologize if the above complaint seems picayune, but I've always abhorred mistake-laden communication, whether written or oral, for reasons too numerous, etc.
