Not a scholarly study,
This review is from: Sex in the Bible: A New Consideration (Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality) (Hardcover)
While Ellens does a good job of breaking down strict stereotypes surrounding sexuality, I've found that he unfortunately tends to make a lot of claims or assumptions that are either not backed up by Scripture or appear to be his own personal moral view. Either way, it is misleading for the reader. He claims that while sex within marriage is obviously ok, so is "sexual communion between unmarried consenting adults within a meaningful friendship, and premarital sexuality between persons exploring the possibility of or engaged in a potential marriage contract." (p.35) While there may be no direct biblical injunction against such sexual contact, Ellens never reveals to his readers by what evidence he has reached such conclusions.

This review is from: Sex in the Bible: A New Consideration (Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality) (Hardcover)
Sex in the Bible offers perspectives from a psychologist, an army chaplain, a pastor, and a Biblical scholar- all the same person. It is rare to have such a combination, all at a high level.
The book is well-written and easy to follow. There are a number of topics that are treated in an intriguing way: the sexuality of God; a re-examination of the story of Onan from multiple perspectives; the relationship between sexuality and spirituality; the evolution of religious teaching because of Thomas Aquinas and Saint Jerome; the interconnections between the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and Islam's Qur'an; and even the current pedophilia crisis. A book that causes you to re-think concepts you thought you understood is very helpful to intellectual and spiritual development. The insights Dr. Ellens shares reveal not only his deep love of God, but also humanity.
