Editorial Reviews

From The New Yorker

A one-man show in which Eric Bogosian plays, in succession, ten characters, none of whom interact with or refer to any of the others; each inhabits his own eerily self-contained world. The surprising thing about this acting tour de force is that its radically disparate parts really add up to something: in rock-and-roll terms, it's a concept album, not just a collection of singles. This picture, directed (erratically) by John McNaughton, was filmed in concert-movie style, with multiple cameras and before a paying crowd, and Bogosian looks relaxed and confident. In the past, his performances often felt desperate, coercive; he seems more willing now to allow the audience some freedom in responding to his characters. There's a real progression in the course of the film, from characters who provoke immediate, visceral reactions to characters whose effect on us is more ambiguous. Bogosian warms us up with surefire stuff to prepare us for the riskier, more demanding material in the final part of the show. His last three monologues are the funniest in the movie-probably the finest work he has ever done. In them, he manages to lure the audience into very strange emotional territory. We begin to see the poetic sense of the monologuists' bizarre belief systems; we see, that is, why each of the lunatics and fools in this movie is convinced that his skewed perspective is a comprehensive vision of the world. That's an amazing thing for a comic performer to do. -Terrence Rafferty

5.0 out of 5 stars The stage doesn't get any better than this!!!, February 16, 1999

E.B.'s Performance Is so great. It takes you into the world that he has created without you even knowing it. You can just listen and be entertained, or take it a little deeper and explore it to new levels. I can't say enough about this video. I have both the Video and the audio cassette. I would Love to see it re-released on CD. It would do it honors.

5.0 out of 5 stars As an actor, it HURTS to see someone this talented., July 13, 1999

I originally watched this video because it was the only thing available for rent that night. Thankfully, I just happened to stumble upon the most intensely talented person I've seen captured on film. If you aren't deeply moved by at least ONE of Bogosian's characters, you aren't alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of 5 "desert island videos" in my collection, June 12, 2004

This "one-man" multi-character show is up there with Richard Pryor's best work for both its brilliance and insightful honesty. You'll find yourself thinking deep-thoughts while laughing out loud at his engrossing character sketches, one after the other in rapid succession. I've watched this show over and over, and the performance and its countless classic lines will haunt you in the weeks and months following your first viewing. Bogosian has an enormous talent and incisive intellect. (...) Fans of this video will also enjoy reading "Mall", a more recent book by Bogosian.
