From the Inside Flap

Sex Equality in the European Union Edited by Tamara K. Hervey Lecturer in Law, University of Manchester, UK David O’Keeffe Professor of European Law, University College London, UK Published in association with the Centre for the Law of the European Union, University College London, UK and the Academy of European Law Trier, Germany. EC sex equality law is increasingly being relied upon before national courts, tribunals and regulatory agencies. Affecting employment relationships and social security rights, as well as other fields, it has given rise to complex legislation and a substantial body of case law which must be applied at the national level. Many significant aspects of the application of this important area of law remain unclear. Moreover, sex equality is now recognised as a general provision of law in the EU and is capable of influencing the future development of many sectors of the law of the European Union. These important aspects of sex equality law have been recognised by the editors of Sex Equality Law in the European Union. They have not limited the coverage of this volume to the more traditional areas of employment and social security, but have instead opened up the debate to include contributions on gender-related issues that produce rights for individuals within the Union — such as free movement of persons and citizenship. This innovative and forward-thinking approach is reflected in the breadth of contributors drawn from leading experts in the field — judges, academics and practitioners from various European countries. Their commentaries provide the reader with an analysis of this complex and changing area of the law from different national, legal and theoretical perspectives. The Academy of European Law Trier was founded in 1992. The aim of the Academy is to raise awareness of the practical implications of European Community law. It is a non-profit organiser of a wide range of courses and seminars on all relevant issues of EC law. Conference proceedings of general interest are published in the Academy’s series of publications in English, French and German (contributions in the original language).
