Book Description

June 21, 2005
This book is an essential resource in helping your children develop healthy, godly attitudes toward sexuality in an age when sex is a marketing tool for everything from clothing to toothpaste. Gleaning from interviews with various youth culture authorities, movie reviewers, youth pastors from across the nation, and teens themselves, the authors have created an informative book to educate and help you guide your children through today's maze of sexual confusion. This book is peppered with statistics, teen language and context, and facts about the media's promotion of sexual freedom that destroys the sanctity that makes marital sex a special gift from God.

More About the Author

I was born and reared just outside of Savannah, Georgia. Yeah, I have a southern accent. It gets a little more southern every time I cross the Florida/Georgia state line.

If I had all the time in the world, I'd probably lie on the sofa all day and watch old movies. I usually have to get sick for something even close to that happening.

I can quote entirely too many lines from Pretty Woman (You do? You think I've got potential?). In fact, I quote lines from movies and songs so often that most people are unaware of what I'm doing. I may or may not have offended some folks. If I have...I'm sorry.

I'm an ex-nurse and a seminary graduate. I hated nursing but love God with a passion and can hardly get through a conversation without talking about our relationship! I think the Old Testament is totally FUN to read (I mean, HOW much stuff can one clan of people get in to?) and the New Testament draws me closer to Heaven. Yeah!

I'm married even though my hubby had to have his wedding band cut off due to an infected spider bite. The nurse said either that or the finger would fall off. I was going for the second option, but was alone in that. :) Now he wears it on his right hand. I can live with that. We have kids and grandkids and two absolutely adorable dogs, Hope and Poodar.

I'm rarely still and I sleep very little.

Life is good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed, August 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sex, Lies, and the Media (Paperback)
I like books that expose what the media does.. but this lady just talked about her family.. And rarely gave any advice... I feel kind of bad for making a review like this but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone! It did give like one interesting fact.. but other than that.. It wasn't a book worth reading. Mothers may like the book but I would of rather heard her expose stuff in the media and.. I didn't really get much out of this book so I stopped reading it cause I couldn't find much I liked.

5.0 out of 5 stars great resource for pedagogical arguments on sex in the Media, February 3, 2006
This review is from: Sex, Lies, and the Media (Paperback)
This is a must read for anyone who cares about cultural trends affecting our society. Eva Marie Everson and Jessica give information and tools to equip people for healthy, godly sexuality especially related to navigating through the barrage of subtle and overt message that bombard our culture.

This book is filled with candid insight illustrated with stories that draw you in and documented research providing crucial information about media's affect on sexuality especially in the United States. Though it targets young adults and brings perspective from them and their parents' generation, it relates to anyone effected by media in the American culture.

Having taught personal health at the college level and engaged adults of all ages in sex health related conversation, I recommend this book for anyone who talks openly about sexual topics with adults as well as youth. Many people of all ages seem to lack awareness in some of the import issues "Sex, Lies and the Media" exposes.

While earning my MA in communication from the University of Central Florida, I studied media and found some of the points made in this book on media albeit controversial in some circles. I wish I had, had this resource to strengthen my pedagogical arguments with my media professor.

To impact people in ways that could protect them from harm, we must use wisdom and sensitivity in approaching the sexual topics with confidence. This relevant book will help the reader do so where media is concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading, November 19, 2005
This review is from: Sex, Lies, and the Media (Paperback)
Sex, Lies, and the Media should be required reading for every parent, grandparent, youth minister, teacher, and adult who crosses paths with teens today. This book will increase understanding between the generations and better equip adults to guide youth who are growing up in the confusion of today's society. On the issues of today, the reader is given dual perspective: that of the adult from Eva Marie and that of a teen from her daughter Jessica. The two-sided perspective gives each generation an idea of how to respond to the other in a positive way. Sex, Lies, and the Media also includes great resource lists of ministries, websites, and others helps for adults who are guiding teens as they grow into responsible, Christian adults.
Once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to know everything Eva Marie could tell me so I could better understand what teens today have to deal with. But don't take my word for it, buy the book and read it!
