An Excellent Resource, Well-Written, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Sex with the Lights On: 200 Illuminating Sex Questions Answered (Paperback)
An AOL Recommended Book, Ducky Doolittle's "Sex With the Lights On" intersperses questions and answers on various sex topics (anatomy, orgasm, oral sex, etc.) with anecdotal snippets culled from her years as a sex educator and entertainer, as well as her own personal experiences and observations. For the reader interested in the literature of sex and sexual fulfillment, Ducky's casual-in-tone, sex-positive book will remind you of other similar, informative books such as the Q&A section of Lou Paget's "365 Days of Sensational Sex," Dr. Ruth Westheimer's "Sex for Dummies," Deborah Sundahl's "Female Ejaculation & The G-Spot," and "Sex Toys 101" by Rachel Venning and Claire Cavanah (this last book being mentioned in Ducky's bibliography). What, then, sets this book apart from all the rest?
The book's main strength lies in its hidden gems, the small details one picks up along the way-for instance, useful informational tidbits on, say, water-based lubricants vs. glycerin-based ones, or the possibility of allergic reactions not only to latex condoms, but also to the spermicide Nonoxynol-9. Having worked in the pleasure retail business, Ducky is also comfortably well-versed in the world of sex toys, their function, care, and maintenance.
Anal sex enthusiasts from the experienced to the merely curious will be pleased, as Ducky donates considerable time and good-natured attention to anal pleasure and health (one reads that she has a particular affinity for this practice, on "holidays"). And then there are the occasional unexpected bon mots, often pretty funny (my two favorite ones are her taglines on penis curvature and the one on "poop,"-I don't want to spoil it for you, but read them and you'll see). The feeling that this is an author comfortable and encouraging about sexuality and all its myriad aspects (not just her own) clearly comes through.
Bottom line: if you're a beginner, check this book out because in between two covers it straightforwardly delves into topics you may have always been curious about but not had the full confidence to ask or explore. Experienced lovers can use this as a quick reference, or at the very least access its lengthy bibliography to lead them to additional resources. In the book, Ducky is neither fully interested in dry statistical numbers (for that read "The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior") nor deep delvings into the psychological/emotional differences between men and women (for that, read John Gray's "Mars and Venus in the Bedroom"). And she is the first one to admit that she doesn't know everything. While scientific studies and gender preferences are to some degree touched upon in the book, Ducky's primary purpose is to entertain as well as educate, to give you the basics, to provide a springboard for basic yet satisfying sexual knowledge and practice, and to enhance your sexual lovemaking. In this, she does very well.

BEST SEX BOOK EVER!, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Sex with the Lights On: 200 Illuminating Sex Questions Answered (Paperback)
I love this book! It is so fun and easy to read, like the author is just speaking to the reader conversationally. The book has lots of tidbits and facts and hints I didn't know, it's very useful! I especially loved the chapter on foreplay, with suggestions of leaving the clothes on for an extra ten minutes to see how excited you can get each other, the chapter on body image with the top fourteen things that make a person sexy from a poll of over 500 people, the emphasis on creativity and the sexiest organ--the brain! Ducky sounds super sex positive and I believe this book would benefit anyone, any gender, any type, any age. It is inspiring and made me feel good about myself and sex.
