Trumpeter Steven Bernstein is not your typical jazz cat. First off, he plays a slide trumpet. Secondly, it's not often you find a downtown musician interested in playing music that is both accessible and humorous. Thus, it's no surprise that his band the Sex Mob (with special guest John Medeski on organ) does select renditions of songs from five James Bond flicks. Bernstein captures the original sophisticated feel of the music, mostly composed by John Barry. Tunes like "Battle at Piz Gloria" are subdued and dreamy, while the carnival-like "007" is more upbeat, sounding like it was played by a bunch of drunken spy-sailors on furlough. Something that will make you scratch your head, tap your foot, and giggle, Sex Mob Does Bond captures everything that is fun and quirky about this band, and makes a great tribute album in the process. Mission accomplished. --Tad Hendrickson

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool Idea October 31, 2001
By Stephen
Format:Audio CD
After two great cds, Bernstein maybe reaches a little too hard here. The vocals are somewhat annoying and completely unneeded. Medeski is a nice addition at times but this one shines most when the band is kicking and Briggan wails.
I hate to say it but this one works better as background music for me than active listening. Still, a weaker Sex Mob disc blows most other cdds out of the water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bond Bond Bond October 8, 2001
Format:Audio CD
If you are a Bond fan this is for you. Many differant varriations on this cd make it a gem. Although, it sometimes goes a little experimental which some people find to be a bit annoying. But those tracks that stick out are GREAT! I suggest buying the cd, but prepared for some acid jazz and experimental jazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bond and Sex = Sex Mob!! September 24, 2001
Format:Audio CD
These guys get my vote for the coolest working band on the planet right now. Taking charts from old Bond movies and giving them that Sex Mob feel translates into one of the most fun and tightest albums of the year. Tony Scher and Kenny Wollensen are one of the best rhythm sections in jazz right now. Steve Bernstein - bubbie, you the man!!

5.0 out of 5 stars bond. done. April 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
it took a reading of the linear notes to fully appreciate this one. bernstein's choice of pocket trumpet sounds like a pocket trumpet, but if you listen to him then you know this is part of his style and his affection for don cherry during the ornette coleman period. what really caught me off guard was my own expectation. bond music, i looked forward to hearing treatments of the signature bond tunes, several of them here, but the rest of the music threw me like a good judo move. in the notes bernstein described how he was creating a soundtrack based on his interpretations of soundtrack music from the bond movies, so once i understood I was also listening to interpretations of scene songs along with the signature songs, i began enjoying the tingling bruises, the after effects of my lesson. bernstein also writes that little richard was a kind of guiding spirit for this music, that i don't hear. maybe i need another lesson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing is cooler than this CD June 29, 2002
By Aris
Format:Audio CD
Great Sex Mob de/reconstruction of Bond music. I thought I never wanted to hear "Nobody does it better" ever again. Now, I can't stop playing it. Same goes for "Bond with Bongos"

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant May 11, 2011
By Art
Format:Audio CD
Brilliant arrangements and performances of the incidental music from the early Bond films. These versions really highlight the quality and "musicality" of the original compositions while re-imagining them in classic Steven Bernstein fashion. This is actually the Sex Mob album I've listened to the most over the years -- probably by a pretty wide margin at this point -- and I find it enthralling and engaging from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars ULTRA COOL !!! February 1, 2005
Format:Audio CD
When I first popped this baby into the cd player I thought "...heh, this really STINKS!!! These guys are WAY OUTTA TUNE!!!"...but I listened on, & caught on. This is ONE HELLUVA cd!!! I play this OFTEN, especially since I love Bond music ...THIS IS A GREAT WACKED-OUT JAZZY & FRESH!!! approach to music which if always listened to can become stale & static, if only by repetition. Buy this...enjoy...
