2.0 out of 5 stars New Age Lite in an Eastern Bottle, January 5, 2007

Although this book purports to expound the sexual practices of Taoism, Tantra, and the Kama Sutra, it is in reality a motivationally oriented lyrical appeal to the power of sensitivity, romance, and the idealistic evolution of sexual union towards spiritual ecstasy. The entire text devoted to traditional Taoist and Tantric practice, however, unfortunately amounts to less than 10 pages of material. The section of the book exploring the Kama Sutra contains 29 drawings of various postures which while adequate for the purposes of illustration, are not particularly endearing, nor are they organized in any particular order. This book is probably best suited for readers who have only a passing interest in Eastern philosophy and sexual practice, and would prefer something motivational in character and simple in application.

The techniques scattered throughout this book have much less in common with Eastern wisdom than they do with homegrown New Age romanticism mixed with good old common sense. Early on and in just two brief sentences, the author largely dismisses the entire body of traditional ancient practice as inappropriate for functional modern relationships. What the author provides instead are predominantly New Age visualizations and affirmations that are quick and easy to learn, accompanied by promises of amazing results upon their application. This "out with the old and in with the new" paradigm is ripe with an Osho influence, as indeed Osho is far and away the author most numerously cited in the bibliography.

Otherwise, contrary to what the author asserts, all men in India are not required to read the Kama Sutra before marriage. A recent poll in a popular Indian magazine, conducted in response to Deepak Chopra's own retelling of the Kama Sutra, showed that not only have the vast majority of Indian men never opened a copy of the Kama Sutra, those who have usually just look at the pictures. When I first read Iam's ponderous misinformation, I was distressed to the point of nearly sacrificing my brand new book right then and there to the deities of my sacred fireplace, or at least the environmentally responsible recycling bin.

Finally, it should be said that this book is really a compilation of 34 extremely short chapters. The content of many chapters has little to do with the chapter title, and the paragraphs within the chapters often do not maintain the flow of a central idea. Suffice to say that in spite of the author's flowery and sensuous writing style, which is sometimes engaging, the concepts are largely undeveloped. It is simply not possible to explore topics in depth given the confines of a 2 or 3 page chapter. There are approximately 175 pages of actual text in this compendium, 50 of which are totally blank or nearly so. At first I was annoyed, thinking the publisher was trying to pull a fast one. Later I saw this profusion of padding as a blessing in disguise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, December 28, 2006

This review is from: Sex and the Perfect Lover: Tao, Tantra, and the Kama Sutra (Paperback)
This had so many wonderful reviews that I thought I would try it out. I have to agree that this is one of the best books on the market if you are looking for a tasteful way to spice up your sex life. It is short and simple, but has relevant and useful information with all the unneccessary mumbo jumbo deleted.
The author has a great simple writing style and it is wonderfully illustrated with easy to follow instructions. This makes the topic of tantric sex sound approachable and fun, and easy to do without making it sound exotic and difficult. Everyone could benefit from this book, even skeptics that think that tantra is some Eastern exotic discipline will find this book demystifies the subject and makes the wisdom of the topic accessible to all.
I read through this book, and then used the techniques to spice up my bedroom life and marriage, and then shared it with my girlfriends so that they could also benefit from it with their partners. It is so tastefully presented that it can be shared and discussed with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Presented Wisdom, February 8, 2006

This is a fine book, well presented with wisdom, heart, and in a tasteful manner. There is a lot to learn in this book, especially about the heart connection and HOW to share this in order to share in a most sacred union.

Mabel's wisdom draws on Eastern philosophies as well as spiritual aspects of love, which, when read, can help anyone who wants to understand more about how to make love beyond just empty sex. And for anyone who would like to learn a lot more!

She shares great wisdom for bringing lovemaking up several notches to help anyone who wants to feel passion and bliss, both inside as well as outside the bedroom in their relationship.

Well presented, and would make a great gift for anyone who wants to enjoy a great love/sex life.

Barbara Rose, Ph.D. author of Know Yourself: A Woman's Guide to Wholeness, Radiance & Supreme Confidence, and Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, March 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sex and the Perfect Lover: Tao, Tantra, and the Kama Sutra (Paperback)
It's beautifully written and speaks to my soul. While reading the first 8 chapters, I was suddenly filled with a feeling of gratitude for having decided to read it. No one has ever explained the act of love on so many levels to me. The explanations of oneness from a quantum level, to physical bodies is amazing. It was presented to me at a perfect time when my marriage was at a pivotal point. After reading this book, my eyes were opened, my heart was opened and my spirit was lifted. The union between me and my husband was strenthened and suddenly more beautiful than it had been for years. This isn't about putting "spice" back into your marriage, or playing silly games. This is about connecting spiritually. The ability is inherent in all of us, lying dormant, waiting to be engaged. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Money, January 29, 2006
The author has done a truly terrific job with this book. The largest factor that I find this book so wonderful is that the pictures are done through drawings and not photographs like most other sexuality authors use today.
Mabel really gets into some of the topics that plague singles and couples on a daily basis and helps sort out simple, yet complex ways of solving those problems.
Mabel is obviously well educated and you can feel it through her writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars A more appropriate title: The Kama Sutra Rephrased, Plus 147 Pages of Fluff, February 25, 2006
My apologies to fans of this book, but I do not share your enthusiasm. I had high hopes for this read, and after page after page about "the purpose of visualizing colors" and "performing the protection ritual," I was relieved to get to chapter 19, which revisits the Kama Sutra positions. Having been an advocate of the Kama Sutra for some time, I can say that these are definitely worth trying, as they will add depth and variety to the physical side of anyone's love life. Aside from this chapter, the book contains little concrete advice on sex; the remaining useful information in the book could be condensed to perhaps ten pages.

Let me say that the author's writing style is not unattractive. Her sentences are ornate and flowery, and would be at home in a book of new-age poetry. Unfortunately, the words lack substance, and the image that they convey is rarely linked to any point or reference whatsoever. I would provide examples of this, but past efforts have resulted in my review being squashed due to quotation. Instead, I offer this simple excercise: Include the following words in a sentence. Flower, love, soul, flame, mirror, energy, divine. You now have an excellent approximation of the writing style used in this book.

If flamboyant imagery is what is missing in your love life, then this book is for you. If not, put on an Enya record and get the same effect, saving yourself hours of fruitless reading. If you don't own a copy of the Kama Sutra, give this book two stars. If you do, give this book a heave.

One final note: Many reviewers talk about using this book to treat a sexual dysfunction or as self-help therapy for past sexual traumas. Love the book or hate it, I can objectively say that both of these topics are clearly outside the scope of this book. People looking for help in either of these areas would do better to consult with a professional, or at the very least choose a text which addresses these issues specifically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keys to Sexual Healing, February 14, 2006
Satisfying sex and dynamic stable relationships are not about new techniques and new positions, but instead about energy, focus, communication and respect.

This book is an absolute gem. Though much of the material can be found scattered around elsewhere, the author has unified a substantial body of practices and techniques and combined principles and practices in a way that is witty, wise and profound.

This, together with David Deida's most recent book, is a must read for anyone who has found something to interest them in Cosmo or one of the other better magazines catering to adults, but would like a little more depth. There is nothing odd, kinky or strange here, just an approach that honors partners and emphasizes and respects not just the physical, but the psychological, subtle and spiritual aspects of mature sexuality.
