The Session or The Experience???,
By NPMusicman (Hauppauge, NY) - See all my reviews

AARRGGH!! WHY do they make TWO separate versions of an album like this?! I got "the session" instead of "the experience," and let me tell you, The Experience edition is better. You get several extra songs for another $2 or $3, and two of those songs (Mona Lisa and... I forget the other) are two of the better songs on the album! I like the album anyway, but it's definitely better getting the experience edition... so stupid. Just make one version of the album and charge the extra $2.00, instead of confusing customers and frustrating them if buy it, get home and open it, finally realizing that they got the wrong copy. Record labels are so friggin screwy these days, and it's getting ridiculous. Releasing separate versions of albums, but making the packages so alike that you can't tell the difference. Release an album, then release a "special" edition several months later with more stuff. I was happy until I realized I got jipped two of the best songs! I would've gladly paid a little more for the better version of the album... SMH...

Thickeness,

Dr. Thicke to the rescue! The title of Robin Thicke's fourth album, "Sex Therapy" is pretty self-explanatory. The lead single and title track "Sex Therapy" is a sensual and soulful sensation where Thicke coos in a complete falsetto about pleasing his woman in the boudoir. For the first time, Thicke really gets sassy with the lyrics on songs like "Meiplé" with Jay-Z, where Thicke hums lines like "two kids in the sandbox babe" in slick monotone. It's hard to get past the disturbingly infectious hip-hop collabo, "Shakin' it 4 Daddy" with Lil' Wayne's new apprentice, Nikki Minaj, where Thicke plays the role of a rich male at a whorehouse. Other notable tracks include the unusually funky "Rollacosa" with Estelle, where Thicke pens some naughty lines like "you know I'm the only one who ever hits your spot". All in all Thicke gives the kiddies what they want, sugary R&B with plenty of sex appeal.

One of the most Soulful albums this year!,

A nice Jazzy interlude "911" opens Robin Thicke's fourth album "Sex therapy: The experience". The name says it all really, affairs of the bedroom are at the forefront, with profainity on some songs so be warned!
"Mrs sexy" is a horn-sprinkled slice of Retro Soul. Title track "Sex therapy" is a steamy ballad with gently pounding beats and Thicke's falsetto at the forefront. "Meiplé" (Me I play) is a playful Latin-tinged upbeat song with Jay-Z (with hand claps and flamenco guitars). The unbelievably catchy "Make you love me" features an incredibly groovy bassline. "It's in the mornin" is another steamy Soul ballad featuring Snoop Dogg. Raising the tempo is the rather skeletal "Shakin' it 4 daddy" featuring Nicki Minaj. "Elevatas" features a Michael Jackson-style squeal, Kid CuDi rapping, and bursts of electric guitar. "Start with a kiss" is a Latin-tinged piano driven Jazzy interlude, while the funky "Rollacosta" with Estelle could have dropped off a Prince album. The Marvin Gaye-chanelling ballad "Million dolla baby" features Jazmine Sullivan, and from there on, it is soulful ballad after soulful ballad: the beautiful falsetto-sung "2 luv birds", "I got u" (which sounds like it is built up from the intro "911", "Jus right", "Mona lisa", "Brand new luv", all are beautiful summery ballads. Closing is the midtempo string-swathed "Diamonds" featuring The Game. Robin Thicke can always be relied upon to deliver classy Soul grooves, and this does not disappoint!

forced and average,

thicke has talent however this feels like a quick album to make some noise after his last album went wood and didn't generate much buzz. Thicke is the kind of artist that reminds you of so many and yet nothing of him ever comes into view. a good songwriter but everything else is polished but nothing memorable. this album feels contrived and just kinda there. hard to say what could turn his music vibe around because he just doesn't have a direction that can take him anywhere it seems.

Love this CD but you have to get Sex Therapy: The Experience [EXTRA TRACKS],

Such a good cd with great guest stars who really help add to the Thicke sound. You have to get Sex Therapy: The Experience [EXTRA TRACKS], I mean for $2-$3 more you get 5 extra songs put in the cd, that go with the flow of the cd so they were placed in the body of the album not at the end. My personal favorite are "Sex Therapy", "Meiplé" (f. Jay-Z), "It's In the Mornin'" (f. Snoop Dogg)& "Diamonds" (f. Game).

I just LOVE me some Robin Thicke!and the songs he did by himself were great(the man has tons of soul and sex appeal)the only reason I gave this cd a "3" was because I really didnt care for the tracks that he choose to teamup with other artists.Next time boo,can it be just about you,it's not like you need anyone else to make you who you already are.

I loved the past 2 cds by Robin Thicke (Do not have the very 1st one). I can listen to them from beginning to end and never feel the need to skip a song. However, this new cd I believe was an attempt to become more mainstream. Almost every song is a duet/collaboration with another artist. There is nothing wrong with duets, but I bought a Robin Thicke CD not Jay-Z, Nikki Minoj, the Game or Snoop Dogg one. I just think his sound and good music get lost in this attempt to be more pop. I think the albulm concept is a great one: sexy and sultry. However, he misses the mark and this cd was a big let down. It is not horrible, but could have been much better.

Tried to do too much on this album,

I love Robin Thicke and was anticipating this album, sometimes I think artists want to be so different than others that they push the envelope too far---an lose their fans. When I heard the singles "Magic" earlier this year I was excited about what he would do on this album and absolutely loved "Sex Therapy" When I first heard it on the radio. His voice is so hypnotizing.
Well how disappointed I was in the album...there is no other song like Sex Therapy...the other songs I couldn't vibe to (except the Jay-Z song has grew on me). I played this CD for two days straight riding around in my car and it usually only takes that long for an album to catch on but this time...it didn't I finally gave up yesterday and took it out and put my Chrisette Michele CD back in. I love you Robin but I wasn't feeling the direction of this album.

Thicke made a few song selection errors,

Robin's 4th installment seems to be keeping his downward spiral going. Robin was just featured on a ridiculous song "Pregnant" off the abhorring album Untitled by R. Kelly. I was scared he might return the favor by featuring R. Kelly but to my surprise he actually did worse. Sex therapy starts well with smooth jazzy 911 intro followed by sultry Mrs. Sexy. The title track Sex Therapy comes in 3rd as Robin doesn't waste any time jumping into his all familiar falsetto to set the bedroom scene. The song is good will set in mainstream play list well. Meiple feat. Jay Z is a track that surprised me. The song has an old school style to it with playful theme. Robin rhyming alongside the master Jay Z will get you repeating it 3 or 4 times so you can understand what Meiple means. Make You Love sounds like Robin is trying to be JT. Lyrics on this song are simple and not that good in my opinion. Otherwise the song is decent.
At track #6 is where I think the Robin lost directionof the them and threw in some fillers. It's In The Morning is a horrible track and Snoop's childish rhyming made the song even worse. That was not it though, Shakin' It For Daddy was another bomb. At this I'm thinking to myself whose album is this? The song is ridiculous I have to remind myself "yes Eric you are listening to Sex Therapy" Elevatas feat Kid Kudi again another misstep on the album, I didn't get the point of it. The song tries to be experimental with a touch of rock but it misses the point completely. Start with a kiss interlude manages to bring you back to the theme of the album but you feel like your taste has already been ruined. Rollacosta feat Estelle sounds like a left over from Justin Timberlake Futuresex/Lovesound. & Million Dollar Baby with Jazmine is another good track with a nice beat. These 2 songs should not feature anybody as Estelle and Jazmine are basically background vocals and don't add anything to it. 2 Luv Birds is your usual Robin love ballad that he perfects with every album and at this point I'm starting to enjoy the cd again. I Got You, Just Right,Mona Lisa & Brand New Luv are really good songs and make you almost forgive Robin for the earlier fillers. Diamonds is a good "Momma" song but its mistake is featuring The Game. The Game does his usual as he name drops. I mean couldn't he find something better to rhyme Momma with without including Obama and Osama in the same sentence? Was this necessary? This ruined an otherwise really good song. Overall Sex Therapy is a 3 star album at the most. Its starting to look like Robin peaked with Evolution Of. He falsetto most of the songs on here and that got annoying. He should have also kept the album PG and not have F bombs and N****a being dropped unexpectedly.Too many featured artists also didn't help the album but ruined it Jay Z was the only money well spent. The album is also all over the place and certainly didn't stick to the theme in a lot of cases. Very disappointed as I was hoping and expected a really good album from Robin to end the year. Oh well back to his Evolution Of I go to remove the taste of this one.

Ditch the falsetto PLEASE!,

Word out to Robin Thicke and Company, please ditch the falsetto. What worked before is failing now. Dude needs to go low. Way low! Dig deep! His high-pitched squeal is annoying this time around. Thicke seems to be confused in defining himself. On too many tracks he seems to be a virtual carbon copy of Michael Jackson, Marivn Gaye or Smokey Robinson. His Motown inspiration is obvious with this release. The mechanical music machinery backing him is God awful! I regret this purchase!
