I read it TWICE,
By michael.dragoni@gte.net (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sex Toys of the Gods (Hardcover)
Call it fluff, call it shallow, call it what you like but this highly entertaining and absolutely hilarious novel will rank as one of my all-time favorites. As a product of the 80s, I could almost HEAR the music McLaughlin was writing about. I could imagine the soundtrack and the wardrobes and, well, it was just flat-out fun and funny. I did it in reverse - read "Sex Toys" and then read "Glamourpuss". Loved them both and like all my fellow reviewers, I'll be at the front of the line for McLaughlin's next novel!! Might I recommend to those who love Mr. McLaughlin's work...Greg Johnson wrote a book called "Pagan Babies" that has also become another of those read and re-read favorites among my collection. Give it a try.

Fast-Paced Fun!,

As with his witty debut, "Glamourpus," Christian McLaughlin pours a bubbly mixture of pop culture and real-life humor that packs a punch. "Sex Toys of the Gods" gives his readers a titillating look inside the Hollywood machine, like "Valley of the Dolls" with a buzz. His second novel will have you laughing out loud and turning the next page faster than you can sing "Shake It Up." After two rounds from this hilarious young writer, I'm ready for another!

Ok, I'll admit, sometimes you just want to vegitate with some nice brain candy. This author is wonderful for that. Loved his first book "Glamorpuss" and bought this one based on that.Diiferent style but still great fun. A nice fairly normal mid-west gay boy out in L.A. who has a thing for 80's pop culture, especially a certain girl group called "the Pop Tarts" Well guess who he happens to meet one day due to a lost dog? And what about her hunky husband? Is he? Isn't he? and if he is, is it worth the friendship? Once again. This isn't war and piece but McGlaughlin's books always leave you smiling and sometimes that is the hardest type of novel to find.

This review is from: Sex Toys of the Gods (Mass Market Paperback)
McLaughlin is great in his newest novel. This book is so funny. I enjoyed all the characters and the great situations McLaughlin thought up for they. This is a book I would highly recommend. He has shown that he can create another novel that is as humorous as his first.

I LOVE this book!,

Christian McLaughlin joins Robert Rodi and Armistead Maupin at the heights of "gay" humor. But what makes all of them so funny is that they do not limit themselves to "gay" but examine the intertwined networks of real life. Every story connects to the next, and in the hands of a poor author you end up with a tangled fishing line. With McLaughlin, you end up with a macrame (sp?) owl.
Sex Toys takes the stories of a rock star, a wanna be, an actress, a nice, slightly confused guy, a totally uptight (and totally corruptable) chick, and maybe even a psychopath, and lets you see the overlaps and effects. Some characters may seem extreme, but caricature is part of the fun. Since only a couple of these characters are actually gay, calling this a gay novel limits it's appeal. The characters are well drawn and engaging, and the loops of the story will give you great laughs. I just hope there is more writing by McLaughlin out there!

I never had such a good time reading. I was laughing out loud. The characters are great, most of them redefining the word sleazy. Thank god Jason appears to be normal. I hope there is a sequel or at least one in the works because this story is not over. Finishing this was painful, I could have read on forever, a soap opera at its finest.

My new favorite author!! Loved Glamourpuss and was so happy when this book came out! I must admit I wasn't sure I would like at first there seemed to be to many characters and they were too bizarre...but in no time I was hooked...couldn't put it down...his characters live the lives I would love to lead! Can't wait for the next one

This is -not- the book you want to be caught reading on public transportation but I could not put it down! Yes, it's a bit trashy and I admit I loved every page. And so did my co-worker!

This book was a hoot! I had a hard time getting into it. The different storylines at the beginning are a trifle confusing but I got into it about 40 pages into it and I didn't put it down until I had finished it. The weird, humorous situations the characters found themselves in were pure genius. I have never laughed so hard from reading a book in my entire life.
