Oh, Canada! From sea to sea! Scourge of the North! The Land of Plenty Ski Trails! The rib of way too many easy jokes! The world already owe you thanks for things like SCTV, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, the late Peter Jennings, and maple syrup; but now it would seem that you've got some serious explaining to do! Pornography? The great nation of Canada is responsible for pornography? Yes, I'm talking about SEXCULA - a bit of a bizarre venture into the world of immortal skin flicks by way of a curious farce.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

Only the truest high dramas use the narrative device of reading an old diary, and SEXCULA comes to life in much the same: the buxomly beautiful descendant of an old countess stumbles across her grandmother's journal, and, during a naked lunch, she suns herself while her male lover reads excerpts and sips wine. Suddenly, the audience is transported back in time to the creation of Dr. Fellatingstein's monster, an intended male sexual consort who's curiously devoid of lust. Before you can say "boo," the good doctor calls upon her cousin - a vampire prostitute named `Countess Sexcula' - with hopes that the curvaceous vixen can spark her monster's loins to life ... once and for all!

These days, young adults have a wealth of choices when it comes to enjoying any number of films exploring truly adult themes, but - back in the day - pornography wasn't available on the boob tube.

As a resident of British Columbia, Canada (where Sexcula was filmed back in 1974) I was intrigued to check out this bit of 'long lost' horror themed porn that Impulse/Synapse DVD authoring have ferreted out of a dark closet somewhere.

Today - Vancouver, BC boasts a highly sophisticated and professional film industry, with many American films and TV series being produced there, and in the immediate environs. Back in the 1970's such was not the case - yet a few ambitious film-makers struggled to realize their 'artistic visions' in 'Fog City' and a few VERY esoteric productions materialized ( like does anyone remember: Marv Newland's "Bambi Meets Godzilla" or Tom Drake's "The Keeper" w/ Christopher Lee!)- then, typically, faded immediately into oblivion. "Sexcula" may be listed among these primitive efforts and its' obscurity was pretty much guaranteed, as it apparently received only a single screening before its' controversial 'adult' nature hastened its' disappearance from the public realm. It is also unusual that this film was purportedly funded partially by grants from the Canadian government's film industry incentive programs - giving it the added distinction of being, perhaps, one of the only porn movies ever made with Federal funding! These may all be interesting bits of background information, but how does this piece of early Canuck sexploitation 'hold up' to modern scrutiny?!

Having given it a watch I'd have to say that the over-all experience was sorta amusing but also suffered from many aspects typical of low-budget porn product from that period. The actual film reminded me of much of the low end adult product that is offered (in bulk!) by the 'Something Weird' cult DVD authoring gang.

Ok, to begin with, one has to rate a movie with this title and cover according to what the movie was intended for: an erotic and soft porn from the 1970s. If one realizes that, then you clearly should not expect intelligent dialogs or good acting. That said, I do not regret buying a copy of this movie as a piece of 1970s unusual porn. Yes, the story line has lots of flaws, but still it gets your imagination away from the typical nowadays porn. Yet, I was a bit disappointed by the fact that you hardly have any close to vampire scene on the story. Our main "actress" is supposed to be a vampire countess coming to cure the lack of libido of a man created toy. However, no fangs or no creative simulated blood sucking are included. Despite that, the movie should appeal to those looking for old fashioned 1970s porn movies as you have some "story line" here. Regarding sex scenes, yes you have lots of male and female nudity, some soft core scenes, and some hard core ones too, not your close-up current porn standards though. I am giving it 3 stars in a scale in which the classic Deep Throat would be a 5 star movie.

Technically, the DVD transfer is widescreen, but just ok in terms of image quality. Essentially, VHS quality. The movie comes with English audio and no subtitles are provided (in case someone cares). The movie runs for 86 minutes.

I've seen worse but not by much. I enjoy a good bad movie but this is just not worth the investment of money or time. Just looking at it, you know the story is going to be ridiculous but there is just so much wrong with this film. The acting is horrible, the dialogue is worse and the story is all disjointed. All of that would be forgivable if it just had that certain something that makes a grade Z movie good. This movie definitely does not have anything special going for it. Top it all off with an appallingly bad video transfer and crap sound and you have the final product.
