Not "Dressed To Kill," but what could be?,

This review is from: Sexie (Audio CD)
The "Sexie" tour followed on the heels (no pun intended) of Eddie's outstanding "Dressed To Kill" production. After hundreds of plays on HBO, and the release of the DVD, "Dressed To Kill" raised audience expectations for "Sexie" to a completely unrealistic level.
At the "Sexie" performance I attended, audience members relentlessly screamed "Cake or death!" and "Do you have a flag?" at Eddie - like Led Zeppelin fans pleading for "Stairway" from Jimmy Page. Eddie finally had to stop and remind the audience that THIS is a different show. Indeed. It stands as a completely unique entity as do all of his previous shows. This isn't his funniest work. It's not "Dress To Kill," and to be absolutely fair, what could be? "Dressed To Kill" is lightening in a bottle. "Sexie," however is every bit as hilarious as his earlier work on "Circle" and "Glorious." That isn't to say that "Sexie" isn't funny. It IS funny! Very funny. Eddie put together some wonderfully twisted views on history, Greek mythology, guide dogs using commando hand signs to get their charge across a busy street, ponders why there isn't a "Sharky" equivalent to "Flipper," and he imagines Christopher Walken performing "Hamlet." "Sexie" deserves a place in anyone's Izzard collection. I DO wonder why the "Sexie" DVD hasn't been released in the U.S. Gee, perhaps some studio executives think that the self-proclaimed "Executive Transvestite" in full drag was a bit much for American audiences? Oh get over it! Give America "Sexie" on DVD. The exposition on silicone breast enhancements bursting while at flight altitude on an airplane needs to be SEEN to be truly appreciated. Eddie is a visual comedian. His body language and facial expressions are half the fun. In the meantime, this two CD collection will have to serve as the memory of the "Sexie" tour - unless you choose to purchase the U.K. DVD and play 'region switching' with your DVD drive (which I did, and my "Sexie" DVD is personally signed by Eddie. Nah-Nyah. ;-) It's a good thing to visit his web site and sign up for the newsletter.)

Suffers only by comparison to "D2K",

It can be said that Eddie Izzard burning at half-light is still brighter than most comedians working today. Monsieur Izzard is admittedly more distracted now, with film work coming first and standup comedy as second priority, but what comes through loud and clear here is the continued workings of a brilliant comedic mind. Sure, it's not "Dress To Kill" (D2K), but it is worth the price of admission for the dedicated Izzardite.
There were two releases of the "Sexie" show, this audio-only version and a DVD release, with this being the better and more lively of the two. It was recorded in Brighton, a town known for its understated wildness going back several generations, and the energy is contagious. The DVD, available for British regions only, was recorded at a performance in Eastbourne which is essentially a retirement community - that was a mistake. The audience has no energy, and more than a little confusion and fear, with Eddie having to make up the difference all by himself. Not fun to watch. There's an extra feature on that package, though, of Eddie with his dad, which is touching as well as funny and worth seeing once if you get the chance. If you use "Dress To Kill" as the yardstick by which to measure Eddie's more recent work, you're going to be disappointed no matter what he does. In the process of doing so, you will miss some entertaining and funny stuff.

Not his best,

This is not one of his best shows. A little draggy (excuse that), unfocused, and just really not as good as some of the
others. I wanted to get the DVD, and we got half way to 3/4 of the way through it and went and did other things. If you're an Eddie Izzard fan, it's a must have. If this is you're first time, do "Dressed to Kill".
