An Explosion of Passion, July 11, 2010
This review is from: Sexo Puro: A Life in Brazilian Song (Paperback)
The story of the Brazilian singer, Suely Mesquita, is told in a distinct and captivating style. It begins with a visual tantalization: Suely Mesquita is a beautiful woman and her mesmerizing personality clamors from the page in artistic and seductive poses. The attendant photos almost give it a film-like feel. Sexo Puro is also a narrative dance. Each story is told from Mesquita's perspective, first weaving in an anecdotal rhythm, then seducing with poetic lyrics that get to the heart of the matter. Her writing and songs are voluptuous and they are sex in its purest form: not only sex, but living, dying, and loving. After listening to the music and reading the book, or vice versa, (or even better--simultaneously), one realizes that the woman and her music are inseparable, they are one and the same. Sexo Puro bursts out in song. Bob Gaulke has captured the essence of a woman who lives as she creates: with pure passion.(less)
