1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money
Ron Louis and David Copeland wrote one heck of a book--"How to Succeed With Women." After finishing I was inspired to read "Sexpectations" and came out completely disappointed. Pitched in tone somewhere between a Cosmo Quiz and one of the raunchier Salon columns, this is a fun book and very difficult to put down once you pick it up. Always stimulating and often quite arousing, though rarely very specific or detailed, the book consist of a selection of short interviews with women who are not at all shy about talking about their (seemingly very active) sex lives.

The author makes a point of asking each interviewee the fastest way to get her into bed. The most common response would seem to be, say hello, get me drunk, and make me laugh. Well, duh! Notwithstanding this advice, this is not a "how to get laid" manual. Unless I've led a much more sheltered life than I realized, these are women of somewhat - unusual - tastes and I would say the odds of running into anyone with these inclinations are pretty slim outside of a handful of specialist bars in one the larger metropolises.

Assuming the author didn't just make up these characters, and the variations in tone would imply that this is not the case, I was left wondering exactly how he met these women. I would guess through ads in alternative news weeklies, swingers' magazines, etc. Can you say self selected sample? No big deal. There is no attempt at (social) scientific method or any other socially redeeming quality, this book just good, smutty fun, and a useful reminder of the almost infinite variety of human desire.

And the cover photo is pretty cool.

Ron Louis and David Copeland wrote one heck of a book--"How to Succeed With Women." After finishing I was inspired to read "Sexpectations" and came out completely disappointed. Sexpectations is crude, obnoxious, and offensive. Louis' study falls completely short of establishing a thorough and comprehensive study, and creates a one hundred-something page pornography. Moreover, Louis fails to interview thousands of women--a primary component of sociological and psychological studies--by gathering no more than a hundred women who explain their sexual fantasies. Louis then concludes that he has answered the question that Freud failed to achieve--what do women want? There is one underlining point that Louis does find that is legitimate--women seek men that have confidence. But who cares; Louis and Copeland have already pointed this out in "How to Succeed With Women." My advice is not to buy this book and do what I have done--go out into the world and find out what women want for yourself.

Certainly entertaining, but the women Louis speaks to are not necessarily your average sort of girl. There's an entire section devoted to professional dominatrixes...

1.0 out of 5 stars Only 2 pages (#100,101) were worth reading, & they were good, July 14, 1999

Interviews of abnormal women the author presents as normal. Per this book almost every woman is heavily into BDSM (bondage, dominance, sado mashochism). It's nonesense! Pages 100 & 101 have some good practical advice, but that's it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Wild, Adventerous, and Intense!!!!!, October 27, 1998

This review is from: Sexpectations: Women Talk Candidly about Sex and Dating (The Ultimate Beginner Series : Basic) (Paperback)
I didn't expect this book to be as intense, and packed full of cutting edge information. Once I began reading, I could not put it down. It was both erotic and fascinating. The women range in age and sexual preference, but all expose a different aspect of female sexuality which seems secretly hidden from the public eye. Every page opened up new intense adventures for my reading pleasure. I've read many erotic novels, S/M books, and many other magazines, but this book is one of the best ever. Louis is a colorful character who seems unrelenting and makes no applogies about his burning desire. Throughout the book he asked questions to women I'd never dare say. Get it if you love sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot stuff!, May 28, 1999

This review is from: Sexpectations: Women Talk Candidly about Sex and Dating (The Ultimate Beginner Series : Basic) (Paperback)
This book was a lot more erotic than I expected it to be--and I didn't realize it would have photographs! These women really let me into the inner workings of the world of women--it's sort of inspired me to be more direct when I talk to women, and so far they seem to like it! It occupies a priviledged place on my bedside table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and intense, July 18, 1999

This review is from: Sexpectations: Women Talk Candidly about Sex and Dating (The Ultimate Beginner Series : Basic) (Paperback)
i had originally purchased this book because it featured an interview with Annie Sprinkle the famed porn star. I wanted to read her views on sex and aating and see if it could be applied to my situation, it was. From there I found a whole new world of women's sexual desires which I never had quite understood before.

To me, most of the negative reviews our here are by guys who want to read simplistic books on getting sex. This book is not about that. For me I walked away from reading this with an understanding of how to approach women about sex, discuss sexual topics, and a deeper understanding of myself in the process.

Some sections read like Penthouse letters, others like a fun article in GQ or Maxim magazine. The interviews shed light on the different personalities of women and left me wondering how come it has taken me 25 years to finally have an inkling of insight into this matter.

Buy this book if the sex lives of women baffle you, and if you feel that there is more to learn. Besides, it was a very fun read.

This is a very interesting read but gives the impression that all women want to be tied up and spanked (and more extreme BDSM). This may or may not be true. Either my sample set or Louis' sample set is out of the ordinary. Either way, this book is entertaining and does provide some insight as to how the female mind works in relationships and proves that there are women out there just as perverted as men, or even more so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but need to focus more on relationships than sexuality, November 26, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Sexpectations: Women Talk Candidly about Sex and Dating (The Ultimate Beginner Series : Basic) (Paperback)
I was shocked to hear what the women were saying! It seems that the ladies are more advanced sexually than men than we felt they are. A very interesting book nonetheless. The ultimate theme is that men need to develop confidence and a clear direction in life above all else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Louis penetrates the minds of sexually twisted women!, October 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sexpectations: Women Talk Candidly about Sex and Dating (The Ultimate Beginner Series : Basic) (Paperback)
Sexpectations is full of perverted sluts. I could not believe this book from the standpoint of the sexual experiences described. I had never even heard of many of the topics explained in great detail. Where in the hell did Louis get these chicks from anyhow? I particularly enjoyed the Annie Sprinkle interview and the S/M references. A definite must read!
