4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of the Change
This CD marked the beginning of TKK's move from darkness to dance. Taken alone, this is a good CD. Sex on Wheelz found commercial success and the rest of the album, not taking itself seriously, sets you up for a fun trip. Fueled by sex and deviant behavior, this CD runs from S&M to alcohol. The music is good, as are the beats and it's good from end to end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Green Andy Reviews: My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult - Sexplosion!, October 4, 2009

This review is from: Sexplosion! (Audio CD)
My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult (known henceforth in this review as TKK) have always been a tough bunch to defend. They were aggressively silly in a genre known for its poker-faced seriousness (goth/industrial), and their albums are always extremely hit-or-miss, with one or two real winners surrounded by a lot of failed experiments and throwaway novelty numbers. This album is the closest the group ever came to a consistent success. It still has a pair of songs that outshine the rest of the record, in particular the runaway hit "Sex on Wheelz", a terrific sleazy dance rocker which delivers pretty much what the title promises, as well as "Leathersex", a prototypical TKK track mixing electro-industrial and Chicago house music, but doing it particularly well.

Fortunately, unlike so many other underwhelming TKK records, the rest of this one doesn't disappoint (for the most part). Overall, this album goes farther than usual for the group in pushing their schmaltzy exotica/spy music affections, like on "The International Sin Set" and "A Martini Built for Two". The album certainly isn't perfect: "Mystery Babylon" is a bit too laid back, and just barely crosses the line into easy listening. And the title track is more or less a non-song, a nondescript beat peppered with assorted vocal samples that starts nowhere and goes nowhere, hurting the flow of the album and sounding like the filler it is. (Check out the similar dead spot title track on GWAR's AMERICA MUST BE DESTROYED album, for another example of this. What is it with the year 1991, that bands couldn't avoid making these things?)

In the end, the bright spots outweigh the dumb spots for TKK on this record. Their sound really isn't for everyone, not because it's too outrageous but because it's oftentimes just too silly, but if they can be said to have a best album, this is probably it.

Sexplosion. That pretty much says it. This seemed like a turning point for the TKK to me. Not as dark/evil as the previous releases, yet not as techno-glam as the later ones. But its all those things with a bit of kink and sleaze and a cherry on top. In summary, its sex-filled dancetracks even Satan could love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goth Gone Dance, June 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sexplosion! (Audio CD)
TKK has always been well known in the Goth & underground crowds. This re-release of their first "in your face" dance CD has drawn much criticism from hardcore TKK fans. But, if taken for what it is, it's a great CD! As with other TKK albums, this one is not for the faint of heart. It's very overt in it's references to drugs and alternative lifestyles. The new extra remixed trax are destined to be dancefloor hits...especially "Farout 1"...which is all about a bad acid trip put to a Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis beat. This CD is campy is as campy as any John Waters film! I thoroughly enjoy it!

i have owned this album for about 3 years and it just recently got stolen from me. i was heart broken. never has an album come out and equalled it in dancability. propably tkks 4th best album, but i don't have REINCARNATION OF LUNA. the main stand out on this album is GROOVY'S and the BOMB GANG GIRLZ' flawless vocals. it is not industrial, but hey it is the funnest album i have ever owned ! standout tracks are MYSTERY BABYLON, INTERNATIONAL SIN SET, CONTINENTAL TOUCH,LEATHERSEX,and SEXPLOSION!

4.0 out of 5 stars 70's porn music, April 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Sexplosion! (Audio CD)
On my first listen, this CD made me think of growing a beer belly with a lot of curly black hair growing out of it. I wanted to have several gold chains hung around my neck while doing the nasty to a few 20 year olds who look like 40 year olds. In other words, it made me want to be in a 70's porn.

On the next listen it sounded even better. This is my first MLWTTKK CD, and it was not what I expected.

If you're looking for dark/goth...maybe one of their other CDs is better for that. For what it is...I do like this CD.

Hooray for groups liked My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult--they certainly have never wished to be mainstream--THANK GOD!! I originally bought this CD when it first came out--eons ago--but, I'd worn it out and needed another! Bluesy, danceable, mind-blowing, and just out-and-out fun, Sexplosion has many great songs that will fill just about anybody's wish. I hope this group stays around for years because they have managed to keep their uniqueness in this cookie-cutter age of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars be my dream, baby, October 9, 2000
This review is from: Sexplosion! (Audio CD)
I enjoy this CD very much. It is a collection of DanceHall music, and lyrics which poke fun at puritanical ...... attitudes. It is captivating and entertaining to me because the lyrics are so sardonic, nearly jaded, yet more than anything else, cheeky. The music is also jocular. I especially like the campy, samples of the James Bond theme. SEX ON WHEELZ is the deserved hit, and everything seems to come together but all the songs are great. LEATHERSEX is an effective use of a diva over dance beats, and the bonus track of this song replaces the diva with a swell duet. If you are interested in one of the most controversial albums from (MY LIFE WITH) THRILL KILL KULT, or if you enjoy fun, infectious dance grooves, this CD will interest you.

Dark and very danceable, this disc is a must-own if you like TKK. Witty, curvy, gritty, and dripping with sin, it's the perfect strip-tease or sleazy cocktail party soundtrack. TKK keep evolving; this is still their best.
