Goodman Sextet: Columbia 1950-52,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sextet (Audio CD)
This is a surprisingly nice-sounding compilation of the Goodman sextet from 1950-1952 (probably his most overlooked period). Many great tracks here, and some that were previously only available on early, long out-of-print EP-45s. Definitely one to pick up if you prefer his sextet stuff over his big-band material (as I do). It has turned out to be one of my favorite CDs of his sextet. Worth it just for the tracks "Devil & Deep Blue Sea", "Farewell Blues", and "How Am I To Know". Benny takes a stab at singing on "Four Or Five Times" also.

High, high quality,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sextet (Audio CD)
Needless to say, you can ignore the 2 star review that is aimed at the copywright holders and has NOTHING to do with this CD. This may not be the most famous of the BG small groups, but it really is second to none. BG is superb - his usual combination of inventiveness and maximum swing while always being in full control of himself and his band. Teddy Wilson is there, of course. And Terry Gibbs on vibes is a true delight, and not only hangs with Goodman, he almost outdoes him. Great fun!

BG-Sextet Best is vinyl CL-652mono,
This review is from: Sextet (Audio CD)
Once again the CopyRight holder/s have NOT included the original CL-652 mono performances as originally released on Columbia vinyl LP CL-652. That is THE classic American Jazz vinyl, featuring Charlie Christian (at his improvisational BEST), Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Cootie Williams, arrangements and score-charts by Fletcher Henderson, who is featured on piano....
