1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Read This Book..., January 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sexual Harassment on Campus: A Guide for Administrators, Faculty, and Students (Hardcover)
Don't read this book without also reading the devastating critique by Daphne Patai, in her 1999 book "Heterophobia...". The Sandler and Shope book is great at creating and soliciting new forms of sexual harassment that are miles away from the original intent of anti-SH laws (to stop quid pro quo demands by supervisors). The book is almost completely silent about rights of the accused, protecting his reputation, and any mention of even the possibility that an accuser can make frivilous or vindictive charges. As Patai points out, innumerable careers are being damaged by ever-escalating campaigns of SH charges, including innumerable cases that bear no resemblance whatsoever to quid pro quo demands (preferential treatment for sexual favors).

We need manuals that recognize that not all women are helpless, infantile victims, that not all charges are true, and that the accused must be presumed innocent rather than fired or disciplined on the spot. This manual falls far short. At very least there should be long treatments about how to protect the reputations and jobs of those falsely accused.
