Book Description

April 1992
For countless numbers of women, the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings opened the gates of denial, & long-repressed memories came tumbling out. In this anthology of women s sexual harassment stories, women write not only of their experiences but also of how they responded to them. Some went into extreme depression or experienced physical symptoms; some fought back; some denied the harassment was happening, wanting to believe it was unintentional or something they themselves provoked. Some found humorous & creative ways of dealing with the harasser. Resource section.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the essays and poems in this anthology, a follow-up to Anita Hill's testimony at the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, women offer accounts of sexual harassment. Debra Kuperberg tells how, as a student teacher of youths in a maximum-security facility, she found it easier to cope with the incarcerated students than with some men on the staff. Adriane Fugh-Berman describes the sexism laced through her medical-school training, while Diane Hugs relates how a doctor exploited her paraplegic condition to fondle her paralyzed limbs. Jana Gary describes a series of incidents, from a professor's inappropriate attention to a man's shoving a pornographic image in her face when she was twelve. While these women's experiences convincingly reveal sexual harassment as a manifestation of "male privilege and dominance" of women, Sumrall and Taylor (who co-edited Women of the 14th Moon ) fail even to acknowledge that sexual harassment cases may also include women abusing women or men or men harassing men. Deliberate or not, it diminishes the value of the work. Illustrated. Author tour.

From Library Journal

Compiled by the editors of Women of the 14th Moon: Writings on Menopause ( LJ 10/1/91) in the wake of the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and as a result of feminist outrage over the treatment of Anita Hill, this excellent anthology features introductions by Andrea Dworkin and Margaret Randall and contains 80 contributions from women, both old and young and from all walks of life, who have welcomed the opportunity to unburden themselves by writing of their own experiences with sexual harassment. These stories--most occurring at the workplace, on campus, on the street, in the home, but also a few documenting a lifetime of harassment--all share an intense anger at the societal conditions that permit such behavior to occur. Highly recommended for women's studies collections in public libraries and wherever interest warrants.
