A Matured E-Rotic, October 17, 2001
"Sexual Healing", the latest offering from German euro-dance group E-Rotic, is a worthy follow-up to the group's other records. The songs here are a more varied collection than on E-Rotic's other albums. Definitely more mature than earlier hits such as WILLY USE A BILLY and SEX ON THE PHONE, "Sexual Healing" may not be as solid as previous album, "Gimme Gimme Gimme", but makes up for it in terms of their effort to further grow with types of music. Here is a song-by-song look at the "Sexual Healing" album:1)L.O.V.E.(SEX ON THE BEACH)- This is a pretty good track that completely encompasses the classic E-Rotic sound. A nice dance track, this song will make you think of the group's much earlier efforts;especially with all of the female moaning throughout! 2)SEXUAL HEALING - By far the superior song on the album, this escapes the traditional E-Rotic sound for a newer, more advanced sound. I really can't get enough of this one, with the heavy beats, piano and distinctive sound very much reminiscent of Eiffel 65. Great track!! 3)TEMPT ME ON THE LINE - Another great one in the traditional E-Rotic sound. I like how the song starts out slowly, and gradually builds into dancefloor mania. By the way, this is a really sexual one. 4)RALPH, DON'T MAKE LOVE BY YOURSELF - I am not so crazy about this one, although it follows the pattern of your typical E-Rotic track. What I really love is the instrumental bridge that begins at 2mins 33secs. 5)VEEJAY THE DJ - The opening is a complete rip-off of ATC's AROUND THE WORLD and MY HEART BEATS LIKE A DRUM, and I love it. Despite the dumbed-down lyrics ("Veejay's a little man, but I'm his biggest fan"), I am really into this song. One of the best tracks on this album! 6)SHAG ME - I'm completely neutral on this one. It is just your typical, run-of-the-mill dance track. However, the guy's voice here sounds really creepy, which takes away from the enjoyment of the beats. 7)LAY BACK - This Ace of Base-esque, raggae-tinged track is a nice diversion from the straight-up dance beats permeating the album. It comes just in time, right in the middle of the record. It is a cute, refreshing piece of pop that is a nice choice by the group - very similar to DON'T MAKE ME WET from the last album. 8)SEVEN SECONDS - While this is not one of my top picks, I completely give E-Rotic writers David Brandes, Jane Tempest and John O'Flynn credit for experiementing with different sounds. This track is much more trance than dance - think ATB. The bridge that starts at 3 mins is a great moment of trance. 9)JONNY Y - One of my least favorites, this song starts out great, but fails as soon as the vocals start. It is so slow and off-key. I have tried to like it, but it is just not possible. Sorry guys. 10)GOT TO GET IT - E-Rotic is back to form with this one. A thumping, bumping dance song, this one sounds a lot like euro-dance from the mid-'90s. There is nothing particularly novel about this song, but it accomplishes what E-Rotic does best - sends your mind into a nonstop dance club with its traditional dance sound. 11)BABY PLEASE STOP - A mediocre track that once again recalls the classic days of E-Rotic. I don't particularly like this one, but it does have its moments. 12)WHEN I LIE - What is up with this one?? Way too slow and bland to be anything memorable, this song will put you to sleep. Euro-dance artists seem to be under the impression that they need to stick a ballad in their albums....this can be found on any number of euro records. We buy dance records, cuz we want dance music - come on guys! 13)TEST MY BEST - This track sounds just like it was lifted off any previous E-Rotic album. A great dance song, this completely uses the typical E-Rotic sound. Everything from the beats to the vocals are a complete rehash, although I was very happy to hear this one. It's a nice highlight, and the final new track on the album. 14)L.O.V.E.(SEX ON THE BEACH)(extended version) - Just like the first time around, only a little faster and a little longer! 15)SEXUAL HEALING(remix) - If you liked it the first time around, here we have the remixed, "souped-up" version of the 2nd track; although I much prefer the original version of this one.
