Excellent book for lesbian couples,
By
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover in a few days. It is well written in an easy to read conversational style. Dr. Corwin is a clinical psychologist who has written this book for the lay public but it would be helpful for clinicians as well. She is different than many writers on this topic in that she describes both the published academic research and clinical examples. She has made the research accessible to her audience with her easily understood descriptions of the findings. Her book makes many good points and covers relevant topics that contribute to sexual issues in couples including desire discrepancy, body image issues, sexual abuse issues, aging and hormones, fidelity and parenting. She gives many helpful techniques that are backed both by research and clinical cases to help a same-sex couples maintain their sexuality. The activities at the end of each chapter can help couples begin to be aware of their patterns and start talking more openly about the issues. I have been working with both straight and gay couples for years, have read most of the sex therapy material and was impressed by how much I learned that I had not known before. Great book!!

Sexual Intimacy for Women is a compelling, well-written and researched look at many aspects of lesbian relationships, including the impact intimacy can have. The book is very readable including actual situations her 'composite' clientele have been faced with and how she helped them through their issues. We can all see ourselves in these pages. Excellent read for anyone in a relationship or hoping to be in one.

A terrific, thought-provoking read!,

This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
Sexual Intimacy for Women is a must-read book, whether you're just beginning to explore yourself sexually or whether you consider yourself more experienced. Dr. Corwin uses a combination of scientific evidence and clinical experience and examples to tackle some very difficult and private issues. Topics include body image, aging, fidelity issues, sexual abuse, lesbian parenthood, communication, and orgasm. Another beauty of the book is that the chapters pretty much stand on their own, so you can read them in any order you wish. At the end of every chapter is an area entitled "Your Turn," in which Dr. Corwin puts forth thought-provoking questions that the reader can work through. Her style of writing is so easy and fluid that it's like having a conversation with a very close friend!

Right on the mark,
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
As a therapist, I am always looking for books that might be helpful for clients - and here is one! I agree with the other reviews about what makes Corwin's book helpful. Her work is both informative and practical. How to keep sex alive in same-sex couples once newness and lust are no longer the driving energy behind passion is a question many struggle with. Corwin's advice is right on the mark. Read it!

Just 'cuz there's frost on the roof don't mean there ain't fire in the furnace!,
By Marie Josette Murray (Atlanta, GA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
As a woman who's been both vigorously heterosexual (to ~30) and lesbian since, I think this book is helpful to both types of relationships. Straight or gay, understanding (or mis-) comes from communication - and not only with others, but also with ourselves. Tricky business, that - how often do we pause to even think about, let alone ponder, what we really want and/or need? In terms of sexuality, enter this book! It's a great read for woman "of a certain age" like me, who pretty much had assigned passion to fondly lustful memories. It reminded me that sex rarely comes along spontaneously. (It just seems that way in our callow youth, along with thinking that every experience is unique to us.) This is a great handbook to getting back your sexual life, sisters! And fasten your seatbelt for something totally rad -- this book also should be read by men who love women and want to understand them better (including those still trying to divine "what women want"). So ladies, think about it - buy yourself one; buy her one; go crazy and buy him one!

Critical information for lesbians,
By
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book, a must read for lesbian couples wanting to revive the sexuality in their relationship. Dr Corwin tackles this touchy subject with humor, wisdom and empathy. It is much more than a sex guide. She has chapters on many issues that affect our sex lives including aging and hormones, parenting, body-image, communication and steps to take to recreate the passion and intimacy we first felt in the beginning of our relationship with another woman. Every woman, single or coupled, can relate to this book and learn from Dr. Corwin's own research and clinical examples as well as her review of the literature on related issues. Not since Joann Loulans' book has there been such an important book on intimacy for women.

The Whole Enchilada,
By
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
Corwin's SEXUAL INTIMACY FOR WOMEN provides, for the first time, a realistic picture of normal women's sexual response and how to use the information to create a lasting, loving relationship. I recommend it as essential reading for all women, even straight women, to understand themselves better and accept the changes that occur in any intimate physical relationship.

Mixed-model approach!,
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
The richness of this book stems from Dr. Corwin's use of a mixed-model approach to look at relationships between women. She analyzes quantitative data extremely well, but skillfully intertwines invaluable qualitative reflections derived from her years of clinical practice. Thus, Dr. Corwin increases our knowledge about intimacy between women, but more deeply enhances that knowledge by just plain telling a lot of good stories.

Valuable resource for lesbian couples - and those who work with them,
By Linda Ellis (Decatur, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sexual Intimacy for Women: A Guide for Same-Sex Couples (Paperback)
This is a great book about passion and intimacy in long-term lesbian relationships. It combines research and case examples to challenge some of the most common myths about female--especially lesbian--sexuality, and offers specific suggestions to enrich sexual intimacy. Corwin covers the most common concerns that women talk about: lack of sexual desire, anxiety about orgasm, negative body image, and sexual trauma. This very positive, hopeful book is interesting and easy to read.
