Book Description

August 1, 1999
An up-to-date guide to male sexual function for those men and their partners concerned about overcoming or preventing impotence, this book offers the information that is key to lifelong potency. In spite of the attention accompanying the release of Viagra and other drugs, many men and women remain broadly ignorant about the causes of occasional or chronic sexual dyscunction. The authors bring together medical and pscyholgical expertize to explain both healthy male sexual function and the problems that lead to impotence. The book details all the available treatment options, with an emphasis on prevention. Special topics include impotence and ageing, myths and fallacies about male sexual function, female sexuality and impotence, and a complete examination of the new impotence drugs. As the authors emphasize, knowledge is essential to the maintenance of sexual health and the successful treatment of impotence.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This could have been titled "The Dysfunctional Male," since the entire work is devoted to helping men and their partners (of either sex) overcome and prevent impotence. Authors Milsten, a urologist and director of the New Jersey-based Center for Sexual Health, and Slowinksi, a psychologist and sex therapist, offer a comprehensive look at male impotenceAits causes, effects and treatments. Helpful chapters, such as "What is Impotence" or "Myths and Fallacies that Promote Impotence," begin with a box of commonsense, albeit obvious, points ("The average time to ejaculation is simply not known"). A section, "Topics of Special Interest," effectively examines a range of interesting issues such as "Is There a Male Menopause" or "Is It Safe to Resume Sex After a Heart Attack." And a self-evaluation section offers more than 20 questions that can help a man start the process of dealing with actual or potential impotence. Unfortunately, the book is marred by somewhat stiff and stilted medical-textbook language ("Any of these situations just mentioned can underlie both primary and secondary erectile difficulties and will require therapeutic attention"). But overall this is a practical health book that takes men's sexuality seriously. (Aug.)

From Library Journal

In the men's health arena, no subjects receive more attention than sexual dysfunction and impotence. In this comprehensive male sex manual for the lay reader, Milsten, a urologist and the medical director of the Center for Sexual Health in Woodbury, NJ, and Slowinski, a clinical psychologist and professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, present state-of-the-art knowledge about the sexual anxiety-provoking subjects that all males may experience at some time in their lives. The material represents the combined advice of both a urologist and a psychologist because problems of impotence may involve both specialties. Intended for the general publicAall ages and both sexesAthis book covers the spectrum of male sexuality from anatomy to Viagra in clear, straightforward, easy-to-understand prose. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing beyond the basics, December 30, 2001

This review is from: The Sexual Male: Problems and Solutions (Hardcover)
The book covers the basics of impotence: physcial and psychological causes. The authors seem to emphasize the psychological more so. Yet their therapeutic suggestions in this area are just about nonexistent.

Their discussion of Viagra is just poor; it is not connected well to their previous chapters. What physical and emotional problems can Viagra overcome and to what degree? Or how long do the effects of Viagra last; all that is stated is how long it takes to become effective. Something is needed beyond the minimal.

The book just does not go past the first level in anything. All in all, I would certainly hope that there is a better book out there for the lay person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Information for Men & Their Partners -- Not Hype., September 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sexual Male: Problems and Solutions (Hardcover)
I found Milsten and Slowinski's THE SEXUAL MALE very complete, scientifically grounded, and yet wonderfully readable. As a psychologist and sexual therapist, I myself have professionally worked with men and couples with sexual problems for more than 20 yeaars, and find this book to be currently the most useful in addressing erection concerns. I especially value that it is realistic, honest, and positive -- avoiding the "hype" that often accompanies books on sexuality. Excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to have a 'sexual problem' to read this book., October 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sexual Male: Problems and Solutions (Hardcover)
As a young single male, I found this book to be very informative and educational. This book focuses not only on the treatment, but also on the prevention of sexual problems. Drs. Milsten and Slowinski have truly written a guide to maintaining sexual health. I found that the emphasis placed on the maintenance of a healthy relationship with one's partner as a means to enjoying life-long sexual potency as being particularly helpful. This book is a must read for men of all ages!
